Snap elections have tentatively been called after the President agreed to Imran Khan's request to dissolve the assembly. Imran Khan had faced a no confidence vote today, with Khan claiming the US was out to get him and that it was all a treacherous plot. The Deputy Speaker, a PTI member, used this to block a no confidence vote, and that's when President Alvi, also a PTI member, agreed to the dissolution. The Supreme Court has been asked to decide whether the blocking of the VONC was legal. It'll also be interesting to watch the army. They have previous supported Khan, but are known to be disturbed by his increasingly vehement anti-Western rhetoric.

My girlfriend is in Pakistan. Martial law possible, apparently.

Bilawal Bhutto, Benazir's son and chairman of the uber corrupt PPP, has called on "ALL" institutions to defend the constitution. A not so subtle hint to the army. I doubt they'd intervene directly, but they have broken with Khan quite publically on Ukraine.

The Pakistan Supreme Court has ruled that the blocking of the no confidence vote was illegal, that it had no legal effect and that the dissolution was not valid. The Supreme Court has now ordered that Parliament reconvene on Saturday and hold the VONC. Khan's parliamentary coup was spectacular, but looks to have collapsed.

There’s a lot of drama going on now with there being rumours that Imran tried to sack the army chief. Him and some of his ministers have been put on an exit list and it appears that he has thrown in the towel. Pakistan should have a new government by morning.

I once spoke to a bloke who'd done some work with Imran Khan years and years ago. I asked him what his view of him was.
"Arrogant c***".
There was no further elaboration, other than to say that he believed this view to be quite common.

I saw Imran Khan close up when he came to sign copies of his book in WHSmith in Croydon in 1988. Not being interested in cricket, I didn’t bother to buy a copy of his book. If I had known that he was going to be Prime Minister, I might have bought one.

I presume the book in question is All Round View, its actually not a bad read but even there the high opinion he had of himself was pretty obvious.
