Ford chose Dole for VP. What if he'd picked sitting VP and ex New York governor, Nelson Rockefeller as running mate?

In this scenario, does Rockefeller still keel over in 1979 whilst "in an intimate position" with an aide young enough to be his granddaughter?

As a sitting VP, it would get even more attention than it did. It would be quite the scandal. Of course, Ford would have to win the election first though.

Rarely does the choice of Vice Presidential running mate make a significant difference to the result, and in this case it would not have made any difference to Gerald Ford's fortunes.

Rarely does the choice of Vice Presidential running mate make a significant difference to the result, and in this case it would not have made any difference to Gerald Ford's fortunes. Rocky being NY Governor from 1959 to the 70s likely wasn't enough for Ford to win there in 1976. It begs the question: when might the VP picked have changed an election result? E.g. if Gore had a Florida VP pick, does he win FL? Also, if you swap Bentsen and Dukakis around, do they do better in '88?
