What if Barbara Castle, and not Margaret Thatcher, was Britain's first female PM?

Of course, she didn't even stand in the real 1976 Labour leadership election. And had by then made clear privately she would retire at the coming election.

Castle would have got into an even bigger mess with the trade unions and strikes than Callaghan did, and Mrs Thatcher would have become PM in 1979 with a bigger majority.

We'd somehow have to cope without the relief of one of the most entertaining features of current UK politics, namely listening to explanations from our Labour friends of how it is that the reactionary Tories have had two women leaders, both PM, whereas the modern, go-ahead, egalitarian, equal-women's-rights Labour Party has somehow managed not to have any.

David is quite right, the Labour Party have a proud tradition of letting a woman mind the shop for a couple of months while the rest of the party get on with deciding which man should replace them.

Aren't they called site managers these days? They have been for years. I apologise in advance for this, but - whoosh.

Back to the main topic-despite the offices Barbara Castle achieved, there was no realistic possibility of her becoming Labour PM in 1976, even if she had stood.

Williams was notably less popular amongst her parliamentary colleagues than she was with the wider electorate.
