If nobody gets over 50% there will be a run off in April, on the 19th.
With a third counted Jose Ramos-Horta (independence leader) is on 44.5% with incumbent Francisco Guterres second on 24.1%

Yes, that has also been detected in Swiss/austrian/... elections. In Europe, at least, caused by Ukraine.

Why would that cause election turnouts to fall?

Why would that cause election turnouts to fall? let alone in East Timor?

And it isn't the case. English wiki is quoting numbers from an article in a local language, but where all the election-specific vocabulary are portuguese loanwords and which is thus fairly self-explicatory - and missing a quarter of precincts. Even that doesn't work out to 44% turnout; maybe that was an earlier set of numbers that is now gone. German wikipedia, for some reason, has the final numbers already. 76% turnout (with a much increased electoral roll from last time, too.) de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pr%C3%A4sidentschaftswahlen_in_Osttimor_2022

Why would that cause election turnouts to fall? So probably not in EastTimor, but in Europe the UkraineWar is in the news permanently and thus trumps the campaignEfforts and regional/local issues.

I can see that, but you might have thought it could also lead to increased political awareness more generally.

I can see that, but you might have also thought it could also lead to increased political awareness more generally. It could, just potentially, lead to some supporters of pro-Putin parties demoralized and just staying home. (RN, Lega, FPÖ, AfD, but also Linke, I'm looking at you.)

These days if the AfD don't put you off, Putin probably won't. They aren't putting up much pretence about who they are.

I do presently not have the time to write myself more, but want to point - after all others might also be interested - to the election, that took place in Timor-Leste (and ended as usual with a victory for the [mid]left).
