The final count appears to be 53 by-elections on 05 May 2022, 13 single seat contests and 40 "double" elections. Two contests were only identified after the close of nominations, a by-election for the Harrogate: Wathvale vacancy following the resignation of a Conservative Councillor and a "double" election in Fareham: Portchester East after a Liberal Democrat had resigned. In comparison there were 56 by-elections in English seats in 2018 - 15 single seats and 41 " double" elections - and similarly 70 in 2014 - 30 single seats and 40 "double" The R in column 3 of the following tables indicates the vacancy arose as a result of a resignation and D following a death. Conservative defences - 18

For the 13 single seat contests there are 13 Conservative candidates, 8 Labour, 10 Liberal Democrats, 4 Green, 6 Independents and 2 Reform - a total of 43 - Rutland: Uppingham will see a change of party as the Greens are not defending their seat. For the 40 "double" elections there are 77 Conservative candidates, 75 Labour, 59 Liberal Democrat, 38 Green, 8 Independents and 17 Others - a total of 274 candidates for the 80 seats. - of the 17 others, 7 are localist candidates: 2 Basingstoke & Deane Independents together with 1 each for Leigh East Independent, Newcastle Independent, North East, Proud of Oldham & Saddleworth and Yorkshire Party - the remaining 10 are Reform (3), TUSC (2) and 1 each for Abolish TV Licence, Alliance for Green Socialism, Animal Welfare, Confelicity and For Britain. Great summary! Just to point out though that Portchester East on Fareham BC is not a by-election, it's a normal two member vacancy election of this cycle. Fareham is a halfs council but has one three member ward (this one) so it elects two members every other election, this being this part of the cycle. It all comes down to Portchester having entitlement for five seats within the borough and god forbid they have to have part of it in a ward with Fareham proper... Making it confusing for psephologists I don't think was ever a consideration unfortunately. Good news on Portchester though, Fareham are currently undergoing boundary changes ahead of all ups in 2024 and it looks like they will be going from 31 cllrs across 15 wards to 32 cllrs across 16 wards, removing the Portchester East oddity

The Liberal Democrat candidate for the Longtown and the Border by-election in Carlisle is currently serving as Mayor of Bury. He's standing down from Bury council this year after 22 years' service.

Also Chief Exec of ALDC. It's the same lineup for the Cumberland election on the same day for the Longtown division.

Given Labour won next door Peacehaven and Telscombe last May, Rottingdean Coastal in Brighton may be a curious fight.
The double seat vacancy in Castle in Worthing is one to watch too.

Labour are certainly giving Rottingdean Coastal a go. They have a local candidate. Both independents are from the near-Kemptown end (it’s a bizarrely shaped ward currently). My partner says that all the candidates look “old and boring” I’m afraid! One independent (White) is getting some posters up and appears to have some local business support.

Given Green strength in Pavilion, Labour may need to win Rottingdean and Woodingdean in 2023 for control of Brighton & Hove. The '15 -'19 swing was big in both. Worthing council likely goes Labour before B&H. If you said that 20 years ago, imagine the reaction.
