Suppose Rockefeller defeats Goldwater in the Republican primary in 1964. How would history be different?
For argument's sake, the nominees are:
Nelson Rockefeller and Margaret Chase Smith Lyndon B. Johnson and Hubert Humphrey

This really was incredibly unlikely.

This really was incredibly unlikely. Was it? If Cabot Lodge, Rockefeller and Smith had coordinated, they could have plausibly beaten Goldwater. Cf Bush, Cruz and Kasich with Trump in '16. It may have been the last hurrah for the 'Eastern Establishment' however.

Johnson would still win: two Northeastern Republicans would have struggled to appeal.

Johnson would still win: two Northeastern Republicans would have struggled to appeal. What would the electoral map look like?
