The disqualified councillor was first elected in 1995, had missed out in 2007 and was elected in 2012 in the old, slightly larger 4-seat Paisley South ward. The SNP councillor for the ward was originally elected as a Lib Dem.
Current Council: SNP 19; Lab 13; Con 8; LD 1; Ind 1; 1 vacancy.

A promising candidate for the Tower Hamlets Award for incompetent electoral administration here. The problem here is not the electoral administration itself. The problem here is the legal advice that allowed the by-election to go ahead. If this was just an isolated problem that would be one thing, but it's not. Today's polls in Wigan and Allerdale are the also result of some very dubious decisions by the council's legal teams over councillor eligibility. Either this plus the handling of the Mack case is coincidence or there's a wider problem here.

Could it be that there is a problem with the law rather than the electoral administration? the law and/or the legal advice available to election administrators.
