Large sections of the far left like to ignore the fact that some of their “revolutionary” heroes of the Past have turned into the totalitarian and ruthless dictators of the present.

You'd think he'd be the one man who would know that Somoza was a warning not a blueprint.

I don't know what "left" many on this thread are taking their cue from, but most that I am aware of realised that Ortega was a bad 'un some time ago.
(and of course, it has also been a while now since he was meaningfully "left" in any case)

(and of course, it has also been a while now since he was meaningfully "left" in any case) I suspect even most politically interested left wing people don’t know much if anything about Ortega/Nicaragua. Venezuela was good at propaganda and the well covered meltdown of their economy means quite a lot of people are aware of their politics. The same cannot be said for most of the rest of Latin America.

The wife seems really dangerous I haven't read that BBC article, but she is. The Times had a superb foreign affairs dispatch in it today about how she backed Ortega when her daughter accused him of rape and child molestation, she purposefully dresses as a stereotypical Romany fortune teller, complete with massive bangles, and she seems to think she's a 'sorceress'. The article ended, chillingly, with a quote from her daughter saying that she's not afraid of her father, but her mother because her mother is obsessed with power, and will do anything to get it. Ortega's got a bad heart and she's co-president btw🤦🏻♂️. Not just Vice President, co-president. Here it is 👇🏻 www.thetimes.co.uk/article/nicaraguan-dictator-jails-rivals-as-sorceress-wife-waits-in-shadows-c0rbfx2g8
