But there won't be so it's likely to be a Conservative hold. Labour cannot peel away enough Conservative voters to win. The Greens have pockets of some local government strength but we shouldn't underestimate their skill in cocking up by-election opportunities. The Lib Dems are probably best placed to draw in the breadth of support needed but recent times have not been kind. An anti-sleaze independent, especially one with local connections, could win.So step forward . . . er . . . Ian Woosnam? There are apparently talks in place between Labour, the Liberal Democrats, and the Greens to back just such a candidate: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-59167967References to Tatton there, but . . . The key point was that the "disgraced"* MP was restanding there. The "disgraced"* MP will not be standing in this case. How credible would an anti-sleaze candidate be if the Tories field a squeaky clean candidate with no political baggage? * I place disgraced in inverted commas as, in both cases, the reality may not be fully reflected in the wider perception.

That's nearly as good as my Lembit suggestion.
Tony Blair?

So see Patterson has said he will remain a Public servant, Well wonder will that will be in unpaid charity work? I'm sad to say it but I imagine it will entail a short walk to the other end of the Palace of Westminster.
You heard it here first ...

Lib Dems probably won't do it. Why would they? Why? Because they don't feel they can win, or come second, and this would give them an excuse not to be compared in that. Also there are better looking by-elections and this will be a distraction. And an anti-sleaze candidate has the potential to keep the story going and provide immense distraction

This is a key point that the overexcited activists and journalists on Twitter and elsewhere seem either ignorant to or happy to ignore. Martin Bell won against the sleaze-tainted incumbent. Any “unity” independent contesting this by-election wouldn’t be able to attack the new Tory candidate as a corrupt rulebreaker.

We should wait for the unprincipled Toryphobes to select their 'anti-sleaze' candidate then adopt Martin Bell as the Conservative candidate. That'll fuck with their tiny minds good and proper...

In terms of demographics or just Lib Dem track record? There are less retired people for a start. Can you be "less retired"? Does that mean you go into work for part of the week?

Not guaranteed to play out like that, particularly if the Tories choose a gaffe prone candidate This will be a free hit for the electorate

Not saying the Lib Dems will win but this is the most promising.

Johnson is the one who flew back from the climate change summit to take the advice of Charles Moore to back Paterson and throw the standards commissioner under the bus. Johnson is the embodiment of the problem.

Things have probably changed since I moved away , but it’s reassuring to see that The Tizer while focussing on this as the main story , also shares it with its more traditional fare , such as a report of a talk on penguins at the Gobowen WI. I remember when first coming home after a couple of years in London buying a copy at the station. The headline concerned a disturbing outbreak of thefts of milk bottles in Oswestry.

"Labour, the Lib Dems and the Green Party are discussing standing aside and backing an independent "anti-sleaze" candidate in the by-election prompted by Tory MP Owen Paterson's resignation. Talks were held on Thursday after he confirmed he was standing down in North Shropshire, which has been an ultra-safe seat for the Conservatives." www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-59167967

Aaaarrrgghhhh!!! The whole point of an independent is that they can win where party candidates can't. Having the parties stand down and support them defeats the point of the whole exercise So another tory wins? I'm not entirely sure what you mean by that comment, but the whole point of an independent anti-corruption candidate is to reach voters that party candidates can't - namely, Tories who don't want to vote against the party but might be willing to teach them a lesson once, and the generic "all politicians are scum" vote. The best, probably the only, shot at beating the Tories is a credible independent candidate, and an independent candidate explicitly endorsed by Labour/LibDem non-appearance is by definition not a credible independent candidate
