The election of Trump has .... shown just how powerful identity politics and smear tactics can be. Continued As for identity politics you must be joking. The Democrats have been championing identity politics for decades now. Yeh, and some of us have been saying for years that this was a terrible idea that would be massively counterproductive for progressives... Exactly how some lefties didnt see that dividing the population up into competing groups and getting them to agitate for their "own kind" would be divisive...well that's one of the great tragedies of the 21st century.

Though in recent times identity politics has arguably been utilised at least as much by centrists (like HRC) as left wingers.

Yes indeed. And one of the greatest challenges for future politics now is how we're going to persuade those who have just discovered how powerful white identity-politics can be, that they should drop it and walk away. Why on earth would they do that when they've just seen its power to deliver victories like Brexit and Trump? It really is a fuck up.

Perhaps even more interesting will be what happens when these prove to be the ultimate in pyrrhic victories.

Worth pointing out here that one attraction of the present Labour leadership for some (despite its manifest shortcomings) is its willingness to talk about class.

Back onto the cabinet point. There are apparently rumours that Trump is considering significant jobs for his elder sons and Kushner. That would be an appalling idea. Not just because they would be clearly nepotistic appointments but because such a thing would go down extremely badly with an electorate that has just bought into his rhetoric about politics and the economy being run on jobs-for-the-boys lines. But really, if they were that gullible, its hard to be sympathetic. And given that Trump is a walking mass of total contradictions....

Even if one doesn't think much of Darroch, replacing him with a nakedly political operator with no diplomatic experience is the kind of nonsense we would expect of the Septics rather than our general approach.

I have very little time for Darroch but the primary function of HM's Ambassador to the United States is to advocate the position of HM's Government. The notions that who holds this post should be influenced by the President of the United States or that Nigel Farage would be suited to such a task are both palpably absurd.

Indeed. But we rather set that precedent when Boris was appointed Foreign Secretary...

YouTube provides the ElectionNight at FoxNews (in 4 parts):
Sorrily FOX were slower with allocations than CNN and didn't go much into deeper analysis, so only few CountyResults, always without saying, how much was where missing. All TelevisionChannels seem to have been inable to compare the PartialResults already in with those of 2012, only K.Rove made this for the EarlyVotes in FL. ("The NYT projects a Trump-victory at 91%" "Where do they get their data from?")

Indeed. But we rather set that precedent when Boris was appointed Foreign Secretary... that will be your stupidest post today. You very rarely say anything that teenage Possibly this is something of a precedent. In 1977 Peter Jay, son of Douglas Jay (one-time Labour Cabinet Minister) and son-in-law of Jim Callaghan (then Prime Minister) was appointed at the age of 40 to be Ambassador to US by David Owen (now Lord Owen) despite not being a diplomat and having never held any public office. He had worked at HM Treasury before being a journalist where for 10 years had been Economics Editor for The Times.

Change of diversity 2000-2015: That looks very similar to the map of swing to Trump:

The howls of protest from the "alt right" this morning are entertaining. Who woukd have thought Trump was not a man of his word?
