In the PresidentialElection yesterDay the cons. candidate (an OpusDei-member) won against the heir of socialistic exPres. Correa. There had been an upwards-trend for him since the first round, when he ended below 20% and only narrowly ahead of the Indios-representative. The latter and lots of his supporters spoilt in the RunOff their BallotPapers (~17% InValid).

I'd rather have seen Pérez in the runoff than Lasso, but I can't help thinking that a break from Correísmo will do Ecuador some good.

A bit of a shock result?

After the first round Arauz was clearly favoured, but recent polling was very tight.

Ideological labels notwithstanding, it was always obvious that Hervas' supporters were going to break for Lasso. And Arauz had some pretty bad news cycles since the first round (and he is basically a cipher, openly just a surrogate candidate for Correa) . Once the Indigenous boycott started to look serious, it was obvious that the election was up for grabs.

Is that an after-shock or an echo?

He wasn't among the frontrunners, although the election is a bit of a free-for-all with the incumbent centre right President Lasso not standing and he might have made the run-off.

A drug cartel, Los Lobos, has claimed responsibility for the murder. One attacker was killed in the shootout and six Colombians have been arrested. Even in a violent place like Ecuador, it's still astonishing that a presidential candidate can be gunned down in broad daylight.

Around the local®ional elections it seemed, that the Correistas of RC would sweep to power. But after internal quarrels, scandals, a disputed candidate (pretty woMan close to Correa, antiAbortion) and finally the assassinations their star has been declining and a defeat - even in round I - is no longer impossible. On the rise has been an exFrenchLegionaire (an Indep. nominated by PSC), who has from the beginning focussed on security. The rePlacement of the murdered investigative journalist will probably do very well, too.

1 thing is certain in Ecuador: You mustt ignore the opinionPolls! They had Noboa at 3% (1 company at 6%) and now he is second in the mid20ies! Not sure, what his program is (apart from being the son of a bananasBillionaire, who had candidated for the position without success for several times).

Looks like Noboa has won the runoff. Yes, over 70% is done now and he has led in a surprisingly consistent way with 52%.
