2017: Ind 1405, 625; SNP 719, 409; Con 998; LD 515; Grn 388 The 2017 boundary review expanded the ward slightly towards Inverness in the North East corner. Previous results: Oct 15by: LD 1029; SNP 1000; Con 467; Ind 293; Grn 287 (LD gain from SNP following Drew Hendry’s election as MP) 2012: Ind 1194, 659; SNP 840, 287: LD 498: Con 279; Lab 221; UKIP 66 2007: Ind 1215, 1125, 322, 192; SNP 892; LD 550; Con 355; Lab 292
The two incumbent indys have been the same since 2007 and one was incumbent for Loch Ness West prior to that. The successful by-election candidate from 2015, was the unsuccessful candidate for the LDs in 2017.

The SNP candidate was the LD cllr elected in 2007 and the unsuccessful LD candidate in 2012 and 2017. The same indy has topped the poll here in every election since the ward’s creation.

Caron Lindsay? *That* Caron Lindsay? Yes, she lives locally. She was the candidate in 2017 in neighbouring Livingston North ward which is where she lives.

The same indy has topped the poll here in every election since the ward’s creation. the defunct Borders Party incumbent was the second strongest indy in 17 (I wondered what happened to the party and googled it instead of asking here).

Looking at this week's trio of by-elections, it may be difficult for all three imcumbent parties to retain their seats seeing how the first preference votes dropped in 2017. In the Borders though, the imponderable is the large Independent showing last time and whether that will split evenly with the two candidates, or filter away. Last time it appears that with three candidates, the Indy transfers seemed to stay relatively loyal. So it would probably end up a race between the lead Indy and the Con candidate for the seat

What's the other surviving cloverleaf? All but one of the arms of the one on the A14 are now shut, so I can't think of any others.

The Headless Cross junction in Redditch, which was the only full cloverleaf ever built in England. Yup, still there in all its magnificence. I really must do what everyone says they'd love to do and go round all 4 inner loops sometime, ending up still going the way I started going, and with this cloverleaf being quite large, you can still keep up a reasonable speed. The Cousland cloverleaf is tiny by comparison, and you'd need to slow down to a crawl to take it safely.

... demonstrating why cloverleafs are not routinely considered as a junction solution - they take up an awful lot of room, quite apart from the traffic weaving issues involved in having an off-slip *after* an on-slip (in their favour, they can be built with a minimum of one bridge, reducing costs in that area). Still, Redditch was a place where all kinds of, er, innovative traffic ideas were considered, but few of them made it onto the ground before the money ran out.

2pm in the Highlands. Lazy. No excuse this time, there is only the one to count. That's 16 hours after the polls close to even begin counting. I mean, on a certain level I get doing next day counts as it saves money, but why wait until the afternoon for goodness sake?!
