Snap elections amid a gov't crisis too complex to properly summarize. Looks like the Communist-Maoist merger is coming undone. Will be very interesting to watch.

Had posted about this on the Nepal thread in the General Politics section. The Supreme Court has not yet given a verdict on whether the dissolution of Parliament by PM Oli is constitutional. So it is possible that the elections may not yet happen on these dates.

I and apparently the forum missed this, but there actually was a general election in november 22. Numbers and some pretty nice maps are on wikipedia, but key takeaways: The strange Congress-Maoist-Communist groupers-Madheshi coalition beat the Communists but fell just short of a majority. The Communists remain largest party in votes though not seats. (165 fptp seats and 110 pr seats, no not an additional member system). The Maoist result was distinctly underwhelming, but then what's the point of voting for Maoists allied to Congress? Could have been worse, though. There was a, fairly modest, revival of parties to the right of Congress, the RPP and the brandnew RSP. And then this happened: www.dailyo.in/news/how-former-guerrilla-leader-pushpa-kamal-dahal-prachanda-returned-as-nepal-pm-38361Lmao.

Communists + Nationalists and reactionaries keeping out Congress kleptocrats: my ideal coalition 😉. On a serious note; it’s impossible to map these parties ideologically anymore due to the sheer number of ideological somersaults they have taken except for the NC which vaguely resembles a pre Rahul Gandhi INC as it always has.

Things have moved on here as Prachanda has thrown out Oli and replaced him with the Nepali Congress. So essentially the pre-poll alliance is back in power but with the smaller party heading the government and the larger one supporting it. The new (or old?) coalition has also elected its nominees as President and Vice-President with Ram Chandra Paudwal of the NC being the President and Ram Sahaya Yadav of the Madheshi People’s Socialist Party being the Vice President.
