NORTH LANARKSHIRE UA; Fortissat (Ind elected as SNP resigned) Candidates: CALLAGHAN, Ben (Conservative)
COLE, John Arthur Henry (Liberal Democrat) DAVIDSON, Kyle (Green) KELLY, Peter (Labour) QUINN, Sarah (SNP) WILSON, Neil (UKIP)
Sept 17by: Lab 1420; A Better Britain – Unionist Party 858; SNP 761; Con 424; Ind 184; Grn 24; UKIP 18 (Lab gain from Con) 2017: Lab 1477, 363; SNP 1016, 449; Con 670; NO Referendum Maintain Union Pro-Brexit 559; Ind 509; The ward is the SE corner of North Lanarkshire, taking in Shotts, Dykehead and part of Newmains. The 2017 boundary changes were relatively minor, taking in a bit more territory around Newmains. 2012: 2012: Lab 983, 982; Ind 981; SNP 695, 529; Con 111 2007: Lab 1596, 1125; Ind 1529, SNP 1396
Since the last attempt to run this in November, the Lib Dem has disappeared from the notice of poll.
So the ward went from an election where the top candidate didn’t get elected to one where the bottom candidate did. The Independent councillor from 2007 and 2012 was the unsuccessful indy in both 2017 elections. Kyle Davidson stood here for the Greens in the last by-election.
Current Council: Lab 30; SNP 29; Ind 8; Con 8; 2 vacancies
NORTH LANARKSHIRE UA; Thorniewood (SNP resigned) Candidates: AJALA, Oyebola (Conservative) BUDD, Joseph (Independent) CUNNINGTON, Eve (SNP) GARDNER, Daryl (UKIP) LOUGHRAN, Helen (Labour) McGOWAN, Rosemary (Green)
ROBB, Colin (Liberal Democrat)
Sept 19by: Lab 1362; SNP 1202; Con 296; LD 168; Grn 46 2017: Lab 1568, 786; SNP 1460, 351; Con 519
Since the last attempt to run this in November, the Lib Dem has disappeared from the notice of poll.
And this is the South West corner of the authority. The 2017 boundary changes resulted in the ward losing a considerable chunk on it’s Eastern side, but in all 3 elections under STV Thorniewood has elected 2 Labour and 1 SNP councillor, although in July 2015 the SNP held a seat in a by-election on a 12% swing from Labour.
The Lib Dem and the Green stood here in the by-election last year. The UKIP candidate stood in the last Fortissat by-election.
Current Council: Lab 30; SNP 29; Ind 8; Con 8; 2 vacancies

Just a quick note to say that the above is largely a cut and paste from the thread when the elections were previously scheduled.
Unfortunately, I started the year by slipping on the ice and smashing my (dominant) right wrist up pretty badly. It's now healing with two metal plates in place, but still very lacking in movement, so everything isbeing done left-handed. I will try to put up the by-election previews, but apologies if they are either briefer or more typo strewn than normal.

Two of my friends, separately, have broken bones in falls this year, one on ice and the other slipping on wet leaves walking down a steep hill. Both have spent the last month laid up mostly immobile. I just hope their houses are nice and warm!

So one of the former councillors here is an acquaintance of mine (and Facebook friend no less). He stated back when the by-elections were last run that he wasn't going to vote, but if any endorsements appear this time around I shall let you all know.
Last I saw he was flirting with Action for Independence but no candidate here obviously.

Wouldn't be too surprising if Fortissat ends up being UKIP's best result in a while. This was the ward which gave the British Unionist Party 23% at the last by-election in 2017, and as they're not standing this time, UKIP are the next best thing for those who are that way inclined.

It's possible, but given that it's UKIP I wouldn't put money on it...

After all these months, (if we are lucky), only 7 more days and the odd hour or so and we can all happily return to analysing by-election results from places we have never visited. Bliss
BTW Isn't anyone going to open a thread on the Lord Speaker's election? I won't comment-not in public.

We can see if this weeks events will effect the support for the SNP .

Not sure the extent to which last day or so will affect matters. Many votes will already have been cast by post.
Sadly, since we have no by-elections as a baseline for comparison, it will be difficult to judge what influence recent days will have had.
New Scottish Labour leader tomorrow-impact?

We can see if this weeks events will effect the support for the SNP . To be honest if you're voting SNP in Lanarkshire then you're already used to vicious factional infighting at a level well ahead of Sturgeon vs Salmond.

Could Mr Sarwar have a successful first week as leader?!
Given that there have been by-elections previously in both wards we will be able to compare turnout and the split between postal and in person votes.
North Lanarkshire is however also one of a bloc of authorities in the central belt from Glasgow-Fife and East Lothian through Edinburgh where most are still seeing a rise in 7 day infection (coronavirus.data.gov.uk) and where case levels are well above the UK average. It will only be speculation whether this will also hit turnout but I'm sure the difficulty of campaigning will.

No doubt corona will be used as another excuse by many authorities to do next day counts. So if we add a day across the board, that means Tower Hamlets's results for the London Assembly will be out on May 12th.
