Inspired by a discussion on my Twitter.
In my own seat of Bolton South East, Yasmin Qureshi has been the MP since 2010 when previous MP Brian Iddon retired. That takes us back to 2010 since the last retirement.
For Bury South, you have to go back to 1983: David Sumberg won the seat when it was first created; he lost re-election in 1997 to Ivan Lewis, and Lewis lost re-election in 2019 to Christian Wakeford.
For Hemsworth, you have to go back to 1974 when Alan Beaney retired. Alec Woodall was deselected in 1987; George Buckley died in office in 1991; Derek Enright died in office in 1996, and Jon Trickett has served since then.
The streak for Belfast East goes back to 1950 when Thomas Cole retired. Alan McKibbin died in office in 1959; Stanley McMaster lost re-election in February 1974; Bill Craig lost re-election in 1979; Peter Robinson lost re-election in 2010; Naomi Long lost re-election in 2015, and Gavin Robinson has served since then.
The streak for Peterborough goes back to 1943 when David Burghley resigned to become Governor of Bermuda. Viscount Suirdale lost re-election in 1945; Stanley Tiffany lost re-election in 1950; Harmar Nicholls lost re-election in October 1974; Michael Ward lost re-election in 1979; Brian Mawhinney was redistricted out of the seat in 1997; Helen Clark lost re-election in 2005; Stewart Jackson lost re-election in 2017; Fiona Onasanya was removed by a recall petition in May 2019; Lisa Forbes lost re-election in December 2019, and Paul Bristow has served since then.
Can anybody go further back than 1943 in the same constituency?

Huw Edwards lost in 2005, Roger Evans lost in 1997, Huw Edwards lost in 1992, John Stradling Thomas died in 1991, Donald Anderson lost in 1970, Peter Thorneycroft lost in 1966, Leslie Pym died in 1945, John Herbert resigned in 1939 to become Governor of Bengal.

As I wrote in the Ask the Forums thread an hour or two ago: What's the longest a constituency has currently gone without a member voluntarily retiring? I saw a Twitter post saying that Hemsworth hasn't had a voluntary retirement since 1974, but it struck me that Belfast East can easily beat that as the last voluntary retirement was in 1950. Since then... Alan McKibbin held it till death in 1959. Stanley McMaster (1959-74) defeated Bill Craig (1974-1979) defeated Peter Robinson (1979-2010) defeated Naomi Long (2010-2015) defeated Gavin Robinson incumbent. Any increases on 1950? Provided one allows that the (1974?)(1983?) name change from Southgate to Enfield Southgate is not material, it at least equals Belfast East: Beverley Baxter held it from its creation in 1950 until his death in 1964 (he had apparently announced his intention to resign at the 1964 GE, but died before the election was called) Anthony Berry (1964-84) assassinated by IRA Michael Portillo (1984-97) defeated Stephen Twigg (1997-2005) defeated David Burrowes (2005-17) defeated Bambos Charalambous incumbent When Southgate constituency was created in 1950, it was coterminous with the Borough of Southgate. Previously, the Borough of Southgate had been part of Wood Green constituency. Beverley Baxter had been MP for Wood Green from 1935 to 1950 - when his constituency was split, he simply moved into (from his perspective) the politically more favourable half. This does not seem quite to meet your criteria - but it comes very close.

Since 1929 only one MP has voluntarily retired from the seat containing Lichfield (whether it be Lichfield, Mid Staffs or Lichfield & Tamworth) and not sought election elsewhere on boundary changes, which was Labour MP Julian Snow in 1970. I dont know how unusual this is compared to other seats. (The Labour MP elected in 1945 moved to Bham Perry Barr in 1950).
The same is true for the seat containing Tamworth since no MP has voluntarily retired since 1983 when the Lichfield & Tamworth seat was divided, although some parts of Tamworth used to be a Warwickshire seat before 1950.

It might be unkind to say it, but you would surely have to say that John Heddle voluntarily vacated his seat..

This is going to be hard to beat.
Caroline Ansell has served since 2019 Stephen Lloyd lost re-election for the second time in 2019 Caroline Ansell lost re-election in 2017 Stephen Lloyd lost re-election for the first time in 2015 Nigel Waterson lost re-election in 2010 David Bellotti lost re-election in 1992 Ian Gow was assassinated in 1990 Sir Charles Taylor was deselected in February 1974 John Slater died in office in 1935 Edward Marjoribanks committed suicide in 1932 Admiral Sir Reginald Hall retired in 1929 as MP for Eastbourne.
Rochester and Strood, through a number of predecessor seats, has a streak going back to 1935.

Yes, Pete was saying the same thing a bit earlier in my response to my post about Lichfield. which I didn't catch because I didn't look the name up. Even though I've heard of that suicide before, in the context of the following by-election, so I could have figured it out based on the seat in question. :/

Fascinating thread! Just a note about this one though - as we know Lewis effectively 'voluntarily retired' as he threw in the towel on his 2019 Independent campaign where he subsequently famously endorsed the Conservatives. But I understand that on paper and 'officially' he lost his seat as it were.

I don't think Mitcham & Morden (and the predecessor Mitcham constituency) has had a voluntary retirement since WWII at least
Siobhan McDonagh (current MP) Angela Rumbold (unseated in 1997) Bruce Douglass-Mann (unseated in 1982 by election after defection) Robert Carr (Mitcham MP for absolutely yonks; stood in Carshalton instead of Mitcham & Morden after boundary changes in 1974)

The only retirement I am aware of in Ceredigion was Cynog Dafis in the milllenium to focus on the Assembly. Prior to that every MP who had become the MP had been defeated at an election and not stood down at the election. Now just checking to see if I am right.
2017: Mark Williams (Lib Dem) incumbent beaten by Ben Lake (Plaid) 2005: Simon Thomas (Plaid) incumbent beaten by Mark Williams (Lib Dem) 2000: Cynog Dafis (Plaid) incumbent stands down 1992: Geraint Howells (Lib Dem) incumbent defeated by Cynog Dafis (Plaid) February 1974: Elystan Morgan (Lab) incumbent defeated by Geraint Howells (Lib) 1966: Rhoderic Bowen (Lib) incumbent defeated by Elystan Morgan (Lab)

There is probably an argument that M&M isn't really the successor seat, mind. The old Mitcham seat was basically Mitcham itself plus a load of territory that ended up in the London Borough of Sutton.
I'm not sure if the area where I grew up was actually in Mitcham pre-74 or in some other seat, but I can't think where else it would've been.

Wasnt there a seat called Merton & Morden? Going from memory rather than looking it up.

Otherwise... 1932: Rhys Hopkin Morris (Samuelite Lib) resigned to become a magistrate. 1923: Ernest Evans (Lloyd George Lib) incumbent beaten by Rhys Hopkin Morris (Asquith Lib) - in this seat Liberal reunification took longer 1921: Matthew Vaughan-Davies (Lloyd George Lib) made a peer 1895: William Bowen Rowlands (Lib) incumbent stands down You have to go back to 1895 for the last time an MP definitely retired at a general election.

Mitcham accounts for about two thirds of Mitcham & Morden and I guess it accounted for about the same proportion of the old Mitcham seat when it included Beddington & Wallington. Of course before 1945 it included Carshalton as well (therefore the whole of the present Carshalton & Wallington seat which would now constitute a majority of the electorate but may not have done before 1945 - certainly not in 1923!)

Any maps of these old boundaries around? I'm really curious now which seats the Merton bits around Streatham Vale, Tooting and Colliers Wood were in at different points in history.
I'm ruling out Streatham and/or Wandsworth Central as I don't think there were any LCC area seats that crossed into Surrey (at least not after 1900 or thereabouts).
