Maine was one of only two states to not vote for FDR in any of his four election wins The other being Vermont which feels even more bizarre when you look at how solidly Democrat it now is "As Maine goes, so goes Vermont"

The election of George Washington as President in 1789. Tactical voting, cities/ports vs. rural, states vs. Federal, and the individual contrafibularities of how each state chose its electors in the first place.

One of the cases recently heard by the Supreme Court and now awaiting a judgment is to test the "independent state legislature" theory: the contention that the provision in Article II Section 1 that each state should "appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct" gives the state legislatures and only the state legislatures the absolute power to set election law - and that no court may interfere with any law they may agree. The case is Moore v. Harper.

The case is Moore v. Harper. Indeed, almost three hours (!!!) of oral argument can be found here: www.supremecourt.gov/oral_arguments/audio/2022/21-1271. And the Amici filings are also available publicly here: www.supremecourt.gov/docket/docketfiles/html/public/21-1271.html. These are mostly comprised of people saying that the ISL theory is nonsensical and insane... but given the current composition of SCOTUS, who knows what the outcome may be...??
