Presidential and parliamentary elections were held until today. 2016 the socialistic party, which had been the only legal one before 1991, lost its majority in parliament, the president remained at them, though.

One of the key issues in Seychelles has been the agreement with India to develop an Indian military base on one of the islands. This will massively increase Indian power projection capacity in the Western Indian Ocean where China obviously has a lot of interests. However, while the former ruling party signed the agreement with PM Modi, it never did anything to implement. The new president who is also an ethnic Indian is expected to be more proactive about it.
