In yesterday's general election in Grenada, the conservative New National Party won a clean sweep of all 15 single-member constituencies for the House of Representatives in an unprecedented result. The liberal, centre-left National Democratic Party went from 11 seats in the previous election to zero. As pleased as I am to see a right-of-centre party win an election anywhere, I have an element of regret that there is no opposition at all. I suppose it partly makes up for the communist landslide in the recent show election in Cuba.

Landslides and even clean sweeps are far from unknown in Caribbean elections.

Moving from zero seats to government in one fell swoop, nice

Thus endeth, at least for now, the tenure of Grenadian PM Keith Mitchell, who had been in office since 2013 having previously served from 1995 to 2008: 22 years in total. Take that, Sir Robert Walpole.
The new PM, Dickon Mitchell, is apparently no relation.

Moving from zero seats to government in one fell swoop, nice Well, there are only 15 seats in Parliament and the use of FPTP tends to exaggerate swings (besides doing its usual job of crushing smaller parties - Grenada's temporary flirtation with multi-party politics (in 1990 and 1995) did not last long).
The NNP has been, on the whole, the dominant force in Grenadian politics since 1984 and in that time achieved complete clean sweeps in 1999, 2013 and 2018.

Results, listed by margins: For a comeBack NDC would need a 2%-swing.
