EILEAN SIAR UA; Na Hearadh agus Ceann a Deas nan Loch (Ind resigned) Candidates: FULTON, Grant (Independent) MACDONALD, Annie (Independent) O’DONNELL, Kris (Independent)
2017: Ind 381 (Cunningham), 189 (Finnegan), 166 (Macdonald), 80, 64, 42, 7; SNP 172, 47 2012: Ind 498 (Macdonald); SNP 202, 33; Lab 69 2007: Ind 583 (Munro), Ind 239 (Macdonald), 84, 76; SNP 136; LD 71
The successful Labour candidate from 2012 was the indy who got 42 votes in 2017, but there can't have been too many councillors who got elected anywhere with just 69 first preferences in the first place.
The former councillor Macdonald (Catherine) was the unsuccessful Macdonald in 2017, but is not the same as the candidate this time (Annie),
As mention elsewhere, Fulton comes from Leverburgh on Harris, the other two candidates give addresses on Lewis.
Given at least 2 party candidates in every election so far for this ward, the lack of one this time is noteworthy.
Current Council: Ind 22; SNP 7; Con 1; 1 vacancy.
Also worth noting that if Annie Macdonald were to win, she would become the only female councillor on the authority (not the first, but the only current one). (Sorry - I'm trying to find something interesting about this contest).

The LEAP database lists 19 candidates elected off fewer than 69 votes at a contested election. 18 of these relate to the City of London Corporation; the other is David Edwards, elected in May 2012 as Labour councillor for Gwynedd, Deiniol with 66 votes. 69 would appear to be a Scottish record for this century.

Leverburgh is a very strange place. The lack of a woman elected last time resulted in a minor storm of outrage in one of the local papers.

The ward name translates as "Harris and South Lewis" which is a bit of a clue as to where it is.
Do any of the candidates have any links whatsoever to any of the councillors/candidates last time or is this the free for allest of all by-elections?

I've already given a translation! It translates as Harris and the south end of Lochs (the name of one of three parishes on Lewis).

This is another electoral division I know well. It includes Clisham, the highest point in the Outer Hebrides, with clear views of St. Kilda on a sunny day.
It also includes the village of Rhenigadale (Reinigeadal), the last village in the UK without a road. When I first stayed in the Rhenigadale Youth Hostel in the mid 1980s, the residents there came and went by boat. We left our car in a car park on the Tarbert to Scalpay road, climbed up across the mountain ridge and dropped down to the head of Loch Trolamaraig and then along the sea cliffs to approach Rhenigadale from the west, a walk of some three hours. By the time of my next visit, they had punched through a road from the north.
There is a deserted village of old black houses along the southern shore of Loch Trolamaraig, with the approach path very overgrown and quite treacherous. The last time I was there, some of the houses were being restored, by descendants of the villagers who had abandoned the village - again arriving at the village by boat.
The coastal road out to Husinish goes past the impressive 19th century Amhuinsuide Castle.
The minor road from Leverburgh and Rodel along the east coast to Tarbert is an exciting roller-coaster ride along a switchback road, with another water-lily lochan around every bend.
ri mo chiad chuimhne !

I predict F 34% M 33% O'D 33% I wonder how confident you are with that prediction? I confess that faced with this one I really have given up on trying to make even a nominal prediction.

Are you sure?
not F 33.3% M 33.3% O'D 33.3%
I'd have thought it more likely!

What a wonderful account. I wonder if all the local people realise how much someone cares. What's the weather been like today?

Fulton 536 - 74.9% MacDonald 158 - 22.1% O'Donnell 22 - 3.1%
Grant Fulton was the only candidate to live in the ward. The 100% male Councillors was retained.
