Parliamentary elections took place yestrerday. Results are presented, for example, here: election.adaderana.lk/general-election-2020/tv/As expected SLPP is heading towards a huge victory. IPerhaps even inclusive the Tamil-areas with a 2/3-majority.

The most expected result ever. Lol. Though the trends in the Tamil areas are surprising indeed.

You are getting detailed results at a sub district level with maps here at the official website of the government: results.elections.gov.lk/. The ethnic breakdown is fairly straightforward at a district level with the entire Northern province (Jaffna and Vaani electoral districts) being overwhelmingly Tamil and predominantly Hindu with a substantial Catholic minority. The eastern province is broadly split between Muslims, Tamils and Sinhalese in that order with Trincomalee being almost 50% Muslim, Batticaloa being around 65% Tamil and Ampara being mixed between all three. Nuwara Eliya in the Central Province is dominated by Tamil Hindu plantation workers and there is a fairly substantial number of Muslims and Catholics in Puttalam district in the North Western Province. The rest of the country is overwhelmingly Sinhala Buddhist though the entire West Coast including Colombo has a fairly significant Catholic minority. This election is a turning point in Sri Lankan election one two levels with the partial return of business as usual politics among Tamils who seem resigned to the fact that the ethnic question is over and they are better off voting on bread and butter issues and of course the absolute destruction of the old pre colonial elite who had led the nation more or less continously from the end of British rule to the election of Mahinda Rajapaksa as President with the only non elite President in this era being Ranasinghe Premadasa. The SLFP has now morphed into the SLPP under the Rajapaksa family and the UNP has now morphed into the SJB under Sajith Premadsasa (President's Premadasa's son). I expect Sajith to be able to put up a strong fight to the Rajapaksa clan next time around.
