How do we get to Italy as a politically stable, economic powerhouse? The latter has been within the country's grasp in the past (and indeed at the time of the Renaissance the Italian states were the wealthiest in Europe).

The latter has been within the country's grasp in the past (and indeed at the time of the Renaissance the Italian states were the wealthiest in Europe). Simples. You have two Italies - North and South. North Italy would be prosperous, probably with a nice Christian Democrat government. South Italy would devalue its Lira until 1 North Lira = 10 South Lira. It then finds a balance based on tourism and FDI manufacturing plants. It would have a permanent populist government.
