The bit that made me think "sprawl" was past the motorway, around the John Lewis and the estates up there. Hmm, I guess you have in mind Orchard Heights and round there, adjacent to the A20 and the Drovers Roundabout (with its cardboard cut out cows- we couldn't afford concrete ones like MK!) That is minute compared with the developments on the eastern and southern site of town. For the benefit of carlton43, John Lewis is where the old circus field was near Ashford Warren, which remains a lovely nature reserve though terribly hemmed in by developments, not least the motorway and the HS railway line which makes it rather noisy, and not the peaceful haven it once was. There are big constraints on development on that western side of town, compared with the south east where the town has swallowed up villages like Mersham, Great Chart and Kingsnorth.

Asford provides the largest element of the new 'Weald of Kent' seat with over 32,000 voters in Tenterden and in the rural North, South and West of Asford district being detached from the Ashford seat. There is is joined by almostg 27,000 voters from the 'Weald' section of Maidstone & the Weald (including the two Tunbridge Wells wards) and another 10,000 from the Maidstone section of Faversham & Mid Kent. Finally a couple of thousand voters come from Folkestone & Hythe in the Saxon Shore ward (Ashford borough). Tenterden is the largest town and is more or less geographically central and would have provided an apt name, but 'Weald of Kent' it is. The rump of Ashford constituency with 57,000 voters now just covering the town itself and a small rural area to the East, is augmented by 16,000 voters further to the East from Folkestone & Hythe - the Bircholt ward which is in Ashford borough (and was in this constituency prior to 2010) and the Folkestone & Hythe wards of North Downs East and North Downs West, which takes the seat all the way to the entrance of the Channel Tunnel.
