His father was a member of the Country Party, of course.

Australian culture is less conservative than it often looks to outsiders.

Bit more complex than that, isn't it? It was the right powerbrokers from NSW that put Gillard in, and while she clearly has a much stronger relationship with the union movement it is not true that Rudd is more right wing across the board. ...and much of the Left has been backing Rudd throughout his 'exile'. The traditional factions don't really come into this in the usual way and policy doesn't seem to at all.

A new poll from Newspoll has the two party preferred vote at 51-49 to the Coalition.

Rudd has already implicitly snubbed Gillard by stating that her preferred election date on 14th September is inappropriate because it's a Jewish holiday.

Latest poll: www.roymorgan.com/findings/morgan-poll-july-8-2013-201307080647ALP 41.5 L-NP 39.5 Greens 8.5 Others/Independents 10.5 Two-party preferred: ALP ahead 54.5-45.5 This would mean a Labor landslide; no wonder Rudd wants to bring the election forward. It is fair to point out that there is another poll, from Essential Media (http://essentialvision.com.au/category/essentialreport) which shows the opposite: L-NP 46 ALP 38 Greens 8 Others/Independents 7 Two-party preferred L-NP ahead 52-48.

The Morgan sample size is an unusually high 3,000.

Rudd has already implicitly snubbed Gillard by stating that her preferred election date on 14th September is inappropriate because it's a Jewish holiday. I just looked up the statistics, and it looks like Jews make up something in the range of half a percent of the Australian population. Given that Australian elections are held on a Saturday anyway, that's looking like a very flimsy excuse.

Any stick to bash her with.
Rudd is proposing reform of how Labor leaders are chosen. Candidates need the support of 20% of the parliamentary party, voting would be weighted 50% parliamentary party 50% ordinary members (no need for special treatment for unions) and challenges mid parliament when the party is in government would be banned.

Not banned altogether but 75% of the caucus would need to ask for a ballot - so effectively banned as that would never happen. Unions have responded by calling for a UK-style electoral college, with a third of the vote going to them: t.co/EhEFfgXJrc

Does anyone know if there's any kind of Australian equivalent of the English Elections website?

Does anyone know if there's any kind of Australian equivalent of the English Elections website? Adam Carr's Psephos site is very good for federal and state elections, although I don't think there is anything equivalent for local elections. Which reflects the low status of local government in Australia.

Generally non-state/federal party partisan - until the recent law change in NSW a number of state MPs sat under a party label there whilst simultaneously using an independent or nominal local label on councils.
There's a referendum about recognising local government in the federal constitution which would remove uncertainty about direct federal funding but it could crash on the decision to give the Yes campaign $10 million and the No $500,000 based on how House MPs voted.

I have to say that I am glad I don't live in Australia as I would find it impossible to vote for Kevin Rudd and his appalling wolf-whistle politics on asylum-seekers. His 'contracting-out' to Papua New Guinea makes me feel physically sick.
