The new Lord Advocate Lord Stewart of Dirleton was introduced today. That will be worrying news for James Wolffe QC... Lord Stewart is of course actually the new Advocate General for Scotland, replacing Lord Keen.

It's between Lebedev and Ruth Davidson for who gets to be the 1500th life peer. Lebedev's title has been reported to be held up by him wanting to include a Russian location in his title or territorial designation, which needs the Russian government to agree. If that's sorted out, he'll be the 1,499th and Davidson will get the honour.

Lord Ahmed (non-afl) retired on 14 November.
In other news, the Lords Conduct Committee agreed a report entitled "The Conduct of Lord Ahmed" which was made to the House today and will be published in the next few days.

In other news, the Lords Conduct Committee agreed a report entitled "The Conduct of Lord Ahmed" which was made to the House today and will be published in the next few days. The Conduct Committee recommended the expulsion of Lord Ahmed. It found that he failed to act on his personal honour by sexually assaulting a member of the public who approached him as a parliamentarian for his help and that subsequently he exploited his position in order to induce her into a sexual relationship. He had been appointed to the Lords by Blair as a Labour peer but sat as non-affiliated due to a previous occasion in 2013 when he was imprisoned following a motorway crash and suspended from the Labour Party - from which he subsequently resigned. He had blamed his imprisonment on a Jewish conspiracy.

I wonder what she thinks of Johnson's latest blubberings.

I wonder if (and presume that) Lucy Scott Moncrieff is related to the acclaimed translator from French of the same surname?

I wonder if (and presume that) Lucy Scott Moncrieff is related to the acclaimed translator from French of the same surname? The monegasque consul in Edinburgh is a Scott Moncrieff. The recent ish biography of CK Scott Moncrieff is going cheap on abebooks.
this is a roundabout way of saying I can't find the connection although there is very likely to be one. C K didn't have any children himself of course...

I think we may have missed that Lord Stoddart of Swindon has recently died at the Lordly age of 94 (a rather overblown - in my opinion - obit in the Grauniad today). He sat as Independent Labour (usually in the very corner of the "bishops' bench" - ie back row - on the Labour side by the throne. Former Labour MP for Swindon, fairly rightwing anti-EU but unusually and usefully pro-local government for a peer (a former Council leader at Reading). He was ejected from the Labour Party after backing an independent socialist ("Socialist Alliance") candidate in St Helens South when ex-Tory rat (whoops - defector) Shaun Woodward was dumped on the seat from on high in 2001. He had a slow and deliberative way of speaking which could be a bit grating but much better than all the gabblers we get among younger politicians nowadays!

His (to put it politely) old-fashioned views on LGBT issues do seem to have been skimmed over by many (this obituary included)

He went to my sixth form college, so I heard about his death. It's sad in a way that these voices of dissent are unfortunately passing away, although he may have had reprehensible views on LGBT people, I think the variation in the Lords is a healthy sign of a somewhat functioning democracy.

Baroness (Judith) Wilcox, Conservative, has given notice that she will retire on 17th December (probably the last sitting day before Christmas).

Recent ins and outs including the two retirements today mean the numbers are now - total 817:
Con 258, Lab 177, LD 88, DUP 5, Green 2, UUP 2, PC 1, Others with political labels 5.
Cross-bench 180, Non-affiliated 51, Bishops 26. Speaker 1.
The hidden politicians are mainly amongst the Non-affils.
