Can any of our Welsh members ( or anyone else) enlighten on the pronounciation of Ynyshir?
It is neither particularly long nor an island, although back in the day it might have been a pasture with the R.Rhondda Fach flowing either side of it. Nowadays, it's a typical valley linear settlement (although no longer than any of the rest) with the river flowing down one side of it. Like many placenames in the Rhondda, it's anachronistic. There may be a magpie in a bush in Llwynypia, but there's no fulling mill in Tonypandy nowadays. Maerdy has no mayor, and there's no quarrying in Blaenllechau any longer.
I have been to Ynyswen, however. I also learnt to pronounce all stations on the Treherbert line properly a few years ago- I was on a course with two girls from (as was) Arriva Trains Wales who made sure of it. Which made for great entertainment after a few pints. How the long nights whiled away.
