Can any of our Welsh members ( or anyone else) enlighten on the pronounciation of Ynyshir? Un-us-heer, using English conventions, I think.

Can any of our Welsh members ( or anyone else) enlighten on the pronounciation of Ynyshir? "Un" as in unheard. "iss" as in miss. The last bit is trickier. It's very close to here (as in over here) or hear (as in can you hear) but probably closer to how English people would pronounce "heer" if that was a word. So Un - iss - heer with a rotative r

Can any of our Welsh members ( or anyone else) enlighten on the pronounciation of Ynyshir? "Long Island." It is neither particularly long nor an island, although back in the day it might have been a pasture with the R.Rhondda Fach flowing either side of it. Nowadays, it's a typical valley linear settlement (although no longer than any of the rest) with the river flowing down one side of it. Like many placenames in the Rhondda, it's anachronistic. There may be a magpie in a bush in Llwynypia, but there's no fulling mill in Tonypandy nowadays. Maerdy has no mayor, and there's no quarrying in Blaenllechau any longer.

I've never been to Ynyshir.
I have been to Ynyswen, however. I also learnt to pronounce all stations on the Treherbert line properly a few years ago- I was on a course with two girls from (as was) Arriva Trains Wales who made sure of it. Which made for great entertainment after a few pints. How the long nights whiled away.

Blimey. Well none of us predicted that Looking at past results, it's reversion to the norm. Don't read too much into it.

Blimey. Well none of us predicted that Looking at past results, it's reversion to the norm. Don't read too much into it. As opposed to 2017, when Labour had an unexpectedly bad year - hang on, that can't be right, can it? Anyway: interesting. There are plenty of places similar to the Rhondda where reversion to the norm will suit Labour down to the ground.

I've never been to Ynyshir. You'd be an ideal Tory candidate for there, then
