The onward march of UKIP into our parish halls continues apace. UKIP has been returned unopposed for the vacancy on Old Catton Parish Council in Broadland, Norfolk. They even managed to nominate two candidates for one vacancy, but one withdrew to avoid a contested election.

I understand that Teale ward in Morley is named after a former town councillor who was killed in a car crash.

Highbridge & Burnham Marine (or simply Highbridge before boundary changes) has been a 3-way marginal, with all three parties holding seats at times over the last 20 years. It swung strongly to the Lib Dems in 2007. Then ex-Lib Dems won two seats as Independents in 2011, leaving Joe Leach, who topped the poll, as the sole Lib Dem representative. His resignation has caused the by-election.
Town councillor Helen Groves is the Lib Dem candidate. She missed out on a district seat in this ward by 15 votes in 2011.
She was beaten by ex-Lib Dem Chris Williams, whose wife Sally is standing as an Independent this time.
Another former Lib Dem, Bill Hancock, is the Conservative candidate.
Former coal miner Ricky Holcombe is the Labour candidate.
Theatrical producer Purple Watkins is an Independent candidate.
Frankly anything could happen, it may be a close 4-way finish, possibly with the LD and Sally Williams being slightly favoured. Nick Clegg dropped by last week to support the LD campaign (and launch their county campaign for May). Labour have been heavily bashing the coalition, and poking fun at most of the other candidates being ex-Lib Dems. Sally Williams seems to have a lot of posters around.

What is the obvious? The Tory looked like a strong local candidate - not much known about the Lib Dem
