The death has been announced of Julian Stanyer, Conservative councillor for Speldhurst and Bidborough ward, Tunbridge Wells council. Meant for the by-elections thread? Yes, that should have been on the by-elections thread. I'll cross-post it there.

Eight new electoral orders have been published: The County of Flintshire (Electoral Arrangements) Order 2021 (S.I. 2021/1215). This order contained a defective commencement provision and has been revoked by the County of Flintshire (Electoral Arrangements) (No 2) Order 2021 (below). The City and County Borough of Newport (Electoral Arrangements) Order 2021 (S.I. 2021/1216). Introduces new ward boundaries for Newport council, with effect from the May 2022 election, and makes consequential changes to boundaries and electoral arrangements for the communities of Graig, Pillgwenlly, Rogerstone and Stow Hill. There are twenty-one new wards, of which three are single-member, seven elect two councillors, ten elect three councillors and one (Liswerry) elects four councillors. The County Borough of Caerphilly (Electoral Arrangements) Order 2021 (S.I. 2021/1217). Introduces new ward boundaries for Caerphilly council, with effect from the May 2022 election, and makes consequential changes to electoral arrangements for the community of Rhymney. There are thirty-one new wards, of which six are single-member, thirteen elect two councillors, eleven elect three councillors and one (Penyrheol) elects four councillors. The Norfolk (Electoral Changes) Order 2021 (S.I. 2021/1219). Introduces new division boundaries for Norfolk county council, with effect from the May 2025 election, and makes consequential changes to electoral arrangements for the parishes of Attleborough, Bradwell, Costessey, Thorpe St Andrew and Wymondham. There are eighty-four new divisions, all of which are single-member. The East Staffordshire (Electoral Changes) Order 2021 (S.I. 2021/1220). Introduces new ward boundaries for East Staffordshire council, with effect from the May 2023 election, and makes consequential changes to electoral arrangements for the parishes of Burton, Outwoods, Shobnall, Stapenhill, Uttoxeter and Winshill. There are sixteen new wards, of which two (Blythe and Crown) are single-member, seven elect two councillors and seven elect three councillors. The County of Gwynedd (Electoral Arrangements) Order 2021 (S.I. 2021/1223). Introduces new ward boundaries for Gwynedd council, with effect from the May 2022 election, and makes consequential changes to electoral arrangements for the communities of Bangor, Bethesda, Caernarfon, Dolgellau and Ffestiniog. There are sixty-five new wards, of which sixty-one are single-member and four elect two councillors. The Monmouthshire (Communities) Order 2021 (S.I. 2021/1227). Makes extensive changes to ward boundaries for Monmouthshire council, with effect from the May 2022 election, in consequence of a wide-ranging review of community boundaries and electoral arrangements in the county. The implementing Schedule has 253 paragraphs, so I may have missed something important here, but highlights include: in Abergavenny, Castle ward is redrawn and renamed as Pen y Fai ward and Priory ward is redrawn and renamed as Park ward; in Caldicot, Green Lane ward is dissolved and a new Caldicot Cross ward is created, with major changes to Severn ward; in Chepstow, the five current single-member wards are replaced by new wards of Bulwark and Thornhill (two-member, an expanded Thornhill ward), Chepstow Castle (single-member, a renamed St Mary's ward), and Larkfield and St Kingsmark (two-member, a merger of two existing wards), with St Christopher's ward disappearing; Llanelly Hill ward is redrawn and renamed as Llanelly; Llanwenarth Ultra ward is redrawn and renamed as Govilon; Llanover ward is redrawn and renamed as Gobion Fawr; The Elms and Mill wards are abolished and replaced by two new wards called Magor East (two-member) and Magor West (single-member); in Monmouth, Dixton with Osbaston ward is redrawn and renamed as Osbaston, and Drybridge ward goes up from one councillor to two. The County of Flintshire (Electoral Arrangements) (No 2) Order 2021 (S.I. 2021/1228). Introduces new ward boundaries for Flintshire council, with effect from the May 2022 election, makes consequential changes to electoral arrangements for the communities of Buckley, Connah's Quay, Flint, Hawarden and Mold, and revokes the County of Flintshire (Electoral Arrangements) Order 2021 (above). There are forty-five new wards, of which twenty-four are single-member, twenty elect two councillors and one (Flint: Coleshill and Trelawny) elects three councillors.

I can’t help but feel the world would be a happier place if more wards sounded like pretentious cocktails.

Indeed so. SI 2021/1232 provides for thirty-nine new wards, of which thirty-two are single-member and seven elect two councillors. Also newly published is The Rochdale (Electoral Changes) Order 2021 (S.I. 2021/1230). Introduces new ward boundaries for Rochdale council, with effect from the May 2022 election, and provides for reversion to election by thirds in following years. There are twenty new wards, all of which elect three councillors.

The 22 Electoral Arrangements Orders for the Welsh council elections next May are all in place now. Which means that over the course of the winter, I shall be able to construct a new UK-Elect file for those councils and then make a detailed tally by the end of next May.

Disappointing given a majority of respondents in both wards preferred the status quo. At least they didn’t push ahead with their Millwall proposal. (Does having is as an ‘other business’ matter at the end a meeting meet the statutory requirement that “The resolution must be passed—[…]at a meeting which is specially convened for the purpose of deciding the resolution with notice of the object”)

Three new electoral orders have been published: The Royal Borough of Greenwich (Electoral Changes) Order 2021 (S.I. 2021/1419). Introduces new ward boundaries for Greenwich council, with effect from the May 2022 election. There are twenty-three new wards, of which fourteen elect two councillors and nine elect three councillors. The St Helens (Electoral Changes) Order 2021 (S.I. 2021/1424). Introduces new ward boundaries for St Helens council, with effect from the May 2022 election, and makes consequential changes to electoral arrangements for the parish of Eccleston. There are eighteen new wards, of which one (Peasley Cross and Fingerpost) is single-member, four elect two councillors and thirteen elect three councillors. The order does not restore the system of election by thirds, as St Helens council has resolved to hold whole council elections every four years from 2022. The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham (Electoral Changes) Order 2021 (S.I. 2021/1425). Introduces new ward boundaries for Barking and Dagenham council, with effect from the May 2022 election. Are those the last Orders required to get the new ward boundaries in place for all London Boroughs that have been reviewed in time for the elections in May?

They are proposing the most epically small parish ward for Malvern Town Council: Lygon. Seriously, check it out. Presumably necessitated by that area being moved into a different ward (Link) but remianing in the same County division (Langland) It is a daft rule that they insist on sub-dividing parish wards in this situation, especially as the council can immediately rearrange the parish wards into something more sensible if it wants to.
