The 40 member National Council is expected to hold elections in October for 20 places (the other 20 is appointed). The emirates of Abu Dhabi and Dubai elect four members, Sharjah and Ras al-Khaimah three, and the colleges of Ajman, Fujairah and Umm al-Quwain two.
Who has the right to vote is determined by the Ruler of each emirate.

This barely qualifies as a "electoral type event" let alone an election.

I think I remember there was a pointless question sometime which involved knowing some individual emirates, and while you might have thought Dubai and Abu Dhabi were pretty well known and maybe Sharjah a good bet for a pointless score without being really obscure, I see to remember it was a pretty blank look all round. What was it about these elections that got us discussing Pointless?

Not that many people realise that the UAE has a federal structure. Evidence the number of people on Pointless who give Abu Dhabi and Dubai as answers in countries rounds.

Let us not forget "Manama, dependency of Ajman".
The fact that it is an oasis settlement of a few thousand people did not prevent it issuing huge quantities of stamps back in the day.
