Pasted from another thread:
We could still get ourselves live-streaming on YouTube or Facebook the next time a by-election comes along. I think somebody may have suggested something like this in the past, though nothing came of it. I do recall that discussion prompting me to think about what kind of content could go in a UK Elections podcast. I'd love to see if we could put together a "Psepholocast". And if I know my podcasts (and I'm a TOUCH addicted to my Google Podcast suggested episodes function), a basic outline could be: *Current affairs roundup *Use one story from that as anchor to larger discussion with historic context etc. *Local by-election roundup *Parliamentary by-election spotlight *AOB An idea to chin-stroke, maybe a new thread?
Various other ideas as to possible feature content, in addition to the weekly by-election news:
Elections 101 (a series explaining the various nuts and bolts of how elections work in the UK) Who are X (a series explaining who various political parties are, and what they stand for, maybe including a brief interview with a party member/spokesperson - I'm sure the Ein Gwlad episode would be really popular ) Overseas Elections (brief mention of any interesting foreign elections coming up) Historic Elections (A look back at what happened in historical British elections)

I'm claiming "Psepholocast" as the name straight off the bat, mind I'd always thought "UK Elections Podcast" simply as something that makes it clear what it is to the uninitiated. But Psepholocast is definitely a more interesting name.

How a count works, and how to observe it. It seems that every count I've been to over 25 years I've had to remind people (most of whom were there 12 months previously) what's happening and what to observe and why to observe. If I'd had the filming equipment I'd have roped up a handful of people to film a demo years ago.

There is more than one political podcast that has genuinely wanted me to do stuff for them over the last five weeks (although only BBC Radio Surrey managed to actually get hold of me to say something). Might be happy to contribute if we can sort something.

Some thoughts about what's needed to turn this into a reality:
Length and frequency
A decision needs to be made about how often this will go out and how long it will be. I reckon we're talking about one of the following: - A weekly half-hour show
- A monthly hour-long show
- A fortnightly show somewhere between those two lengths
Which format is the best depends on how much time the people volunteering to do it are able and willing to commit, and - to a certain degree - how their schedules co-incide (the presenters do need to be free at the same time to do the actual recording).
Roles
Obviously this only works if people volunteer to do it. I see the following roles as being either necessary or desirable:
Presenters
I think it needs two (or maybe three) presenters to anchor the whole thing, so that any episodes/segments without a guest can be done as dialogue, rather than just one long monologue. It doesn't necessarily have to be the same two hosts on every episode (and if we're doing a weekly show with regular hosts there will be weeks where one of them isn't available). Hosts should ideally be personable and free of any major speech impediments/verbal tics.
Scripting
Obviously we don't need a word-for-word script, but somebody needs to at least sketch out the content for each episode ahead of recording, so the presenters know what news they need to cover, how long each segment should be, what feature slots are going to be included that week, etc. Without this, the show is likely to come across as amateurish.
Editing
Recording "as live" should reduce the need for any actual editing, but there may need to be some occasional editing duties (e.g. if we include a pre-recorded interview or guest segment), and it might be worth compiling some of the features into special editions (e.g. if there's a series of Election 101 slots covering a particular aspect of elections, that could then be a special).
Uploading
Somebody has to take responsibility for uploading the finished show onto whatever podcasting services the show will be made available on. If there's also a specific website for the show, then this should probably be done mostly by the person maintaining that.
Extras
There are all sorts of little extra jobs that aren't strictly necessary, but might be worth somebody doing. These include creating a logo, a theme tune, a patreon (or similar) page to cover any costs involved in making the show, creating and running social media accounts to promote the show, creating and maintaining a show website so that archives remain available even if whatever services we post it on go down, and probably a number of other things that I haven't thought of.
The Pilot
Once we've got the above stuff sorted, it's worth making a pilot episode so we know the practicalities of what we're getting into with this project. It also allows us to work out some of the kinks before we put the show somewhere that the general public might find it. I'd propose posting the pilot show on here so that the forum can give constructive feedback. And also having a couple of non-psephologist friends give feedback so that we know it's pitched at a level that's accessible to a novice (or, worse, a political journalist ).

The whole idea is completely nonsensical and impractical. All the psephological stuff we need to do is already here in the forum, in the form of comments and links. Trying to turn it into a podcast would just be too complicated and unnecessarily burdensome.

I quite like the idea of this, it'll actually appeal to more people than this forum will, especially if shows focus on events such as party leadership elections, conferences, by-elections and elections.

We should also talk about international elections from time to time, since I regularly analyse them on my blog.

I wouldn't mind contributing something for the pilot, perhaps say a sort of "Who knows more about elections?" quiz between two members of completely opposite parties (for instance Greens vs Loonies) with questions based on general elections and some of the quirks they have thrown up in the past.
