This is really a long way of asking why on earth the Tories dignified and legitimised the Euro elections by standing in a really half-arsed and lacklustre way, and making their big losses the story of the night when I thought they’d have been much smarter sitting
Them out like Richmond Park. They lost the by-election then but it did little wider damage and they even won the seat back.
So....it becomes clear that the UK has to take part in 2019 Euro elections, Theresa May has been clear that the elections shouldn’t take place as we are a leaving country. However the Tories declare they will not put candidates up as the elections are a waste of time and money. Any campaigning is against the money spent on the elections and the parties who wanted it. There is no significant comeback from sitting MEPs; an announcement is made that they will be A-Listed for MP selections in their regions and Dan Hannan is candidate for Dunny on the Wold before you can say So Long Brussels.
The Euro elections are low key, treated as a proxy 2nd referendum by the engaged on both sides. Turnout is down with the Tory vote splintering in all directions. However there’s a larger number of ‘No election’ spoilt ballots. It’s not at all clear who picked up seats due to the Tories sitting it out, as well as Brexit and Lib Dem surges, Labours collapse is a greater talking point.
Prime Minister May says that the main message is that with turnout down and all the spoilt ballots, the appetite for a further vote isn’t there. With Labour now blamed for the collapse of the cross-party talks, she takes the initiative to set up binding indicative votes, (and isn’t daft enough to push the withdrawal agreement bill with no agreement) where parliament votes to exclusively focus for 2Months on the winning option. Through AV it’s a clear win for May deal + customs union. The Tory headbangers don’t like it, but it brings 30 Lab MPs over in Meaningful Vote 4: Vote Harder in early October which squeaks over the line. May gets a further extension to Dec 31st to pass the legislation, the DUP and ERG quietening down once the MV has been passed and preparing for future relationship battles.
Prime Minister May speaks to the nation on New Years Eve as we leave the EU. Boris sobs into his Prosecco.....
