So the LibDem was local but Labour's candidate not (Brill is a fair distance away) As I suspected might be the case.

Not surprising really as Labour hadn't had a candidate in this ward for nearly 20 years.

The result of the Aylesbury Vale, Haddenham & Stone by-election yesterday had some similar characteristics to the Herefordshire, Bishops Frome & Cradley result on 23 November 2017 when Greens gained a seat from the Conservatives with a swing of 27% since 2015. In both cases the successful candidate had been a Parliamentary candidate for the Green Party, in 2017 for Herefordshire North and 2015 for Aylesbury.

It will also have been similar to the gain we made in Wiveliscombe ward on Taunton Deane council last year. In both that instance and this one, the candidate was a parish councillor for the village who had been active in the village for some years and had a high profile there.

Is this ward near the High Speed rail route? The 'HS2 Amersham Action Group', writing in the Bucks Free Press, imply that HS2 was an important issue in the Haddenham and Stone by-election. In particular: While most Chiltern residents have very little influence over the Treasury, or its select committees, it is still possible to help defeat this project. Every exposure of HS2 incompetence and maladministration reinforces the idea that this is a project which is out of control. Every undertaking ignored to save money shows that they will be unable to stick to the budget, and every poll or petition signed, shows that HS2 is a sure vote loser (as demonstrated by the recent Haddenham and Stone district council election, where the Conservative candidate lost to the Greens).

Even if in the election nobody ever raised HS2 (unlikely, I agree), this action group would still claim this result as a victory.
