Thank you for this Tony. I was somewhat surprised that he joined the Conservatives, although I know there is a fairly strong Tory vote in Walverden.

The Tory vote in Walverden is almost all white, though there is a core of white Labour voters. The Asian voters (about 40%) are more promiscuous.

I don't know if they have left the party as such, the news article just says they "set up a rival grouping". Didn't Aberdeen have two groups of Tory councillors for some time, both of which were still recognised as Conservative members?

This is another ludicrous defection - these defections between extremes (I know, most parties are closer together than they used to be) seem to make a joke of ideology. When I lived in Rochdale, the defections between parties within the Pakistani community were a constant cause of bewilderment and it hasn't stopped. Look at the defection of Cllr Shah Wazir from Lib Dem to Tory and then, 'after reflection', to Labour. The reflection seemed to be that not enough of his community were willing to vote Tory. I don't doubt that there are changes of heart but these seem somewhat daft. It is interesting to note that the younger generation among the Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities are not so easy to manipulate and this is a good thing..

He was also UKIP candidate for Hampshire Police Commissioner last year and failed to get elected to the county council for UKIP this May.

Don't know the story behind this but 7 of the 15 Conservative councillors on Dumfries and Galloway council have left the Conservative group and set up a rival group . Perhaps one of our Scottish posters can explain . Labour/SNP coalition now in control. I'm always amazed when they manage to behave like grown ups..

Without commenting on the particular case, I assure you that we have many people serving life sentences who were not even close to the event of the murder for which they have been found guilty.

I would also point out that joint enterprise is one of the most appallingly implemented parts of criminal law for which a person can end up serving long sentences with no solid evidence of guilt. I know this is not necessarily connected with my above post, but I felt the need to state it.

He said: “I would question his decision to remain in this country whilst being wanted in Pakistan. He needs to be removed immediately from being a councillor and removed by the police to appear before the court.”
Let's ignore due process then. I'll imagine that the Labour group leader is upset by the defection but his attitude is ludicrous.
