I attended a UKIP rally before the last European Election, at which Winston McKenzie was one of the speakers. It was like a trip into the Twilight Zone. I had never seen him in action before, and had only read about him in press reports. He was every bit as rambling and crazy as I had imagined, pulling bizarre invented statistics out of the air like a conjurer producing the flags of all nations (“We’re at SIXTY PERCENT in the opinion polls! SIXTY PERCENT!”). However, in the flesh I could suddenly see that he was not just the motor-mouthed clown I had imagined, but had a warm and amusing side. Unfortunately, this was not sufficient to change my view that that it was unwise – even cruel - for UKIP to use as a front-man someone who is so obviously not cut out for politics. McKenzie finished his turn by inviting on stage a female pastor from a black church who was almost as joyfully, exuberantly, incoherent as he was. The audience seemed to love them both. All of the speakers – good, bad or indifferent - got multiple standing ovations. A journalist was sitting in front of me, his face contorted with loathing and contempt: I wondered if he would drop dead from the sheer horror of it.

Unsurprising. He hasn't been in the Greens or the SNP yet (or the Pirates), so he needs to move on if he wants the full set. Then presumably NI calls.... Bit late for PSP though ... As someone in another place said - he should form a "Party of all the Talents" with Brian Coleman, George Galloway, Denis MacShane and Mike Hancock.

A high profile member of the Green Party in London once told me that Winston applied to join the Green Party (I think this was around 2005, but I may have this wrong) and his application was rejected...

So that's at least two candidates of the 2012 Croydon North by-election who no longer support the party they stood for.

You have missed out Robert Kilroy-Silk and Eric Joyce.

Wasn't there a big Labour falling out there about a year ago? There was a mass resignation of deselected councillors (including the then council leader George Dunning) in February, which took the council into an anti-Labour coalition for the few months until polling day. The belief was that the Labour MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland and candidate (now MP) for Redcar had been encouraging wards to deselect the councillors they didn't like. Labour was one seat short of a majority in the election but was able to cut a deal to elect a Labour administration.

Do you think all parties keep a standard letter handy just in case?

Well, I think we can be fairly certain it wasn't a defection to improve her chances of keeping her seat next year

Not a defection but Katherine Bavage has resigned as Member of the Lib DEms and FE member over Rennard

Not a defection but Katherine Bavage has resigned as Member of the Lib DEms and FE member over Rennard Presumably over the behaviour of the Lib Dem peers (in electing Rennard to the FE)?

Not a defection but Katherine Bavage has resigned as Member of the Lib DEms and FE member over Rennard I note that comments on Liberal Democrat Voice indicate a petition is being got up for a special conference, and a proposal that the Lords representation on the Federal Executive should be removed..... It's quite a kerfuffle, albeit a very polite one.

I saw a tweet earlier today about some Trafford Labour councillor becoming an Independent followed by a reply saying that he had had the whip withdrawn. Can't remember the name though

It's quite a kerfuffle, albeit a very polite one. I support suspending the Lords Party. Rennard is a cancer in our party, it beggars belief that so many people still have loyalty to him. NB, I know there are large numbers of our Lords Party who are absolutely horrified by this decision by their peers.
