very little to time to stage a worker's uprising against the council but i'm sure he'll want to give it a go.

First Communist councillor in Britain since Willie Clarke retired from Fife council in 2016 (though he was fighting elections as an Independent in the last few decades of his career). Honourable mention for the late Councillor John Peck, who was a CPGB councillor in Nottingham from 1987 to 1990 (when he defected to the Green Party). I thought that he had been a CPGB councillor for longer than that, way before 1987, but Wikipedia says not.

He'd been a candidate in every City Council and County Council election for decades and came very close to winning but didn't actually make it until 1987.

Rochford, Hawkwell West (2026). Julie Gooding, Conservative to Unaligned. Rochford, Roche South (2026). James Gooding, Conservative to Unaligned. These two have now formed the Rochford District Independent Party (not to be confused with the Rochford District Residents).

Another ancestorally Conservative council deliquescing into a variety of puddles.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-65119025According to the radio this morning, the SDLP reckon that without him their chances of holding his seat are minimal, and given the surge in support he got in 2019 versus Nichola Mallon's result 5 years earlier, I wouldn't bet against him being re-elected under his new colours.

This is a big blow for the SDLP in what will be a tough election for them in Belfast. I am fairly sure he will be re-elected.

Hastings, Silverhill (2024). Lucian Fernando, Conservative to Independent.
Sandwell, Old Warley (2023). Richard Jones, Labour to Liberal Democrat, according to the website. He seems to have been deselected by Labour (https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midlands-news/sandwells-first-lgbt-mayor-asked-26244759), although I can't yet find anything confirming the website.

If that is the case with Richard Jones, there might be more to come as his brother, mother and partner have all been deselected by Labour as well

They're too late to register the party but presumably sets them up to stand as a co-ordinated group of Independent candidates in next month's election.
