There's presumably a story behind the St Helens defection, because otherwise, as an Australian wag said of the selection of Martin McCague (born UK, raised Australia) in the 1990s, that it is a rare example of a rat joining a sinking ship I can't find any information about it at all. The Tories hold only two seats otherwise both in Rainford and the official Opposition are the Green Party

Could the story be "error on council website"?

Could the story be "error on council website"? If not it's very strange. He was elected on 5 May. Hard to see what has happened between then and now to prompt such a move.

I thought the same. I noted that his email is listed as that of a Tory councillor rather than his?

I have emailed the Tory group leader - it's a mistake and she said if he has defected it's the first she has heard of it! No doubt she will contact the relevant council officers.
Update - it has been rectified.

I'm so glad you said that - my immediate thought was that it was someone from within the Council who thought it would be a hoot to list the most non-Tory looking councillor under their list!

Could the story be "error on council website"? There have been a few of these recently - what causes them? If the data is being entered manually from a list, then errors are inevitable. You can try as hard as you like to try to clean your data, but human error isn't something you can eliminate completely.

I'm not sure it's that simple - in several of the recent ones (here, Cardiff, Bradford) I'm pretty sure these were the only change on the page.

It was especially surprising from looking at his Facebook where one of the last posts was him quoting Steve Rotheram about the strikes (it was blaming Boris Johnson for it).

Doina Cornell (Dursley (Stroud), Lab) has left the party. Unclear if she has left the group or what her position as councillor and council leader is

All that does is make the people who decided to exclude her from the parliamentary selection more convinced that they were right to do so.

Loads of people have resigned their membership which will only make the stitch up that caused all this more likely to succeed. And possibly cost us control of the council in 2024

It should be said that I understand Doina and her partner deciding to resign and I have every sympathy with them. The other resignations less so

The other resignations less so I would say even then that they are giving up the fight too soon, but of course I don't pretend to have your local knowledge. And all told it doesn't really take anything away from the stitch up being a stitch up, and as I said before its the lack of transparency that annoys above all.

Yes they probably are but I think given the emotional toll this must have taken on them its hard for me to criticise and it's a completely understandable decision. My anger at the stitch up is why I'm going to the meeting tonight to vote for Simon Opher rather than driving me to resign. And at the end of the day, change can only come from inside the party. Also, we need our activists to win elections here and if we lose them and the Tories take the council a lot of good work will be undone overnight

Well indeed, I do wonder if the intended beneficiary of the carve up will end up losing out (rather as happened in Wakefield)
