Lol. Can't tell if she's taking the piss or just a loon. Earlier this year she 'staged a walkout' during the council's garden waste collection debate.

Shelley LeBrun (Curdworth on North Warwickshire) from Conservative to Independent Are you related? I do not believe so, but I am currently charting my family tree (to see if I have any Cavalier blood in me) and so far there is no connection (but I have been able to go back to 1741!)

Shelley LeBrun (Curdworth on North Warwickshire) from Conservative to Independent Given that the first Stuart monarch was Robert II in 1371 (who had at least 10 legitimate children) there are probably hundreds of thousands of people who are descended from him. So the odds of this particular one being the first to leave one of the UK's main political parties have to be pretty slim.

What are the rules that define membership of the House though? Not every descendent will be part of it.

What are the rules that define membership of the House though? Not every descendent will be part of it. The tweet said "descendent of" not "member of". That phrasing doesn't imply any kind of membership at all, merely biological descent from the House's founder.

It is a peculiarly self-aggrandising tweet, which adds nothing to her actual action. Very peculiar. As a descendent of Jacobites for whom 'birth by fornication' appears to have been a tradition, and for whom over 200 years of women have been called Flora 'for the MacDonald' (my great-auntie and a cousin having the name in my lifetime), pretend Stuarts are a joke.

I did wonder primarily because I know you have mentioned that you have some family connections to North Warwickshire, rather than because of the extraordinarily weird way in which she expressed herself (although I admit that also played a part in my thinking)

Flora MacDonald! A truly fascinating 18th-century woman, though I didn't think she was well known at all outside of the Highlands. Her life after the rising is worth knowing. Upon her move to North Carolina to take over a plantation, she and her husband ended up supporting the Loyalists during the War of Independence! Contradictory, but not uncommon for many exiled Jacobites. Funny how things turn out.

A lot of those who had been supporting Jacobitism were later found supporting George III. A belief in divine right only went so far and the third George was significantly less objectionable compared to his grandfather and great grandfather.

Three Rivers District Council is becoming increasingly dysfunctional and fragmented. Listening in to proceedings at an extraordinary meeting held earlier this week was a painful experience, as debate was stifled. Not TRDC's finest hour. Bizarrely, the former council leader was present at the meeting, and proposed the main motion of the evening, even though she had sought "leave of absence" at the previous council meeting. The motion was not supported by three members of the Lib Dem group who abstained. See www.watfordobserver.co.uk/news/18618631.three-rivers-criticised-failure-adopt-antisemitism-definition/ Anyway, another defection, hence the post in this thread. Elected as a Conservative, councillor Joanna Clemens (Moor Park and Eastbury ward) is now an Independent. Not an Independent with the two former Lib Dems who are a group together. So the council numbers are now: Lib Dem 22, Conservative 11, Labour 3, Independent Councillors Group (ex Lib Dems) 2, Independent (ex Con) 1.

Three Rivers fell apart when Ann Shaw died, didn't it? Sara Bedford was never any good.

Though my brother has dug back as far as the late C17th in my family and impressively absolutely all of them were peasants, domestic servants etc. Though I like to think that anyone actually descended from e.g. the Stuarts has to put up with their all-conquering ancestors looking down with disgust on their descendants lolling about on the sofa whereas mine are saying "Wow! You've got a sofa!?"

Just to say that anyone clicking on the link will now find it dead. Very strangely, the article has 'disappeared'. A shame, as it was quite lengthy and the journalist must have spent quite a bit of time on it; it was also liberally illustrated with photographs. Has the Watford Observer been "got at"?
