As we're getting a lot of these coming up, this thread can help collect all of these in one place. Vacancies not to be filled until May+ Cheshire East UA, Haslington - Conservative died 10 November + Kirklees MB, Birstall & Birkenshaw - Conservative resigned around 16 November + Peterborough UA, East - Labour resigned 7 November + Peterborough UA, Park - Labour resigned 7 November + Teignbridge DC, Teign Valley - Conservative resigned around 9 November ++ Weymouth & Portland BC, Radipole - Liberal Democrat resigned 1 October + Wychavon DC, Harvington & Norton - Conservative resigned 15 November + Wychavon DC, Lovett & North Claines - Conservative resigned 7 November + 6 month rule ++ local government re-organisation There are two further vacancies under the six-month rule, presumably caused by resignation: Didcot South ward in South Oxfordshire - Anthony Nash (Con) Stanwell North ward in Spelthorne - Kevin Flurry (Con) Another vacancy under the six-month rule Haverhill North in St. Edmundsbury - resignation of Anthony Williams (Independent non-grouped) on 26 November 2018. He was elected as UKIP at the by-election on 5 May 2016, gaining the seat previously held by the late Tim Marks (Conservative). Jamie Shaw, Labour Councillor for Areley Kings and Riverside on Wyre Forest District Council resigned today due to ill-health. I believe there will be a "double" election in May. Wyre Forest is moving to whole-council elections in May so this is a six-month rule vacancy.

Notice of vacancy has finally been published for Margate Central ward, Thanet council, after the council accepted its officials' advice that Ian Venables (Lab) was indirectly employed by the council and therefore disqualified. Because it's taken so long to get to this point the six-month rule now applies.

Darren Wakeham, Conservative member for Selsey North in Chichester District, appears to have resigned on 20 November. so local voters won't get a Selsey bill for a by-election... <iframe style="position: absolute; width: 34.22000000000003px; height: 3.0400000000000063px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none;left: 15px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_24270913" scrolling="no" width="34.22000000000003" height="3.0400000000000063"></iframe> <iframe style="position: absolute; width: 34.22px; height: 3.04px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 1640px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_24063904" scrolling="no" width="34.22000000000003" height="3.0400000000000063"></iframe> <iframe style="position: absolute; width: 34.22px; height: 3.04px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 15px; top: 92px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_77867036" scrolling="no" width="34.22000000000003" height="3.0400000000000063"></iframe> <iframe style="position: absolute; width: 34.22px; height: 3.04px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 1640px; top: 92px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_42739425" scrolling="no" width="34.22000000000003" height="3.0400000000000063"></iframe>

Notice of vacancy has finally been published for Margate Central ward, Thanet council, after the council accepted its officials' advice that Ian Venables (Lab) was indirectly employed by the council and therefore disqualified. Because it's taken so long to get to this point the six-month rule now applies. As I understand the law, that may not necessarily be the case, notwithstanding Thanet's interpretation. The governing provision is s. 87(f) of the Local Government Act 1972 which states that the date of the vacancy is "the date on which his office is declared to have been vacated either by the High Court or by the local authority, as the case may be". If the Act had meant the date on which the local authority issues a certificate to such effect, it would have said so. I would have thought the statute really means the date on which the local authority declared he had a disqualifying employment, which was back in August.

middleenglander, you should also add the + to the vacancy on St Edmundsbury BC, since that is being merged with Forest Heath DC to become West Suffolk DC from 2019 onwards.

Tired, not sure why I’m trying to stay awake for South Lakeland, I think there should be a By-elections Anonymous support group.

I think Andrew is making a point about the 'East Lancashire' accent in Burnley.
Purely in may personal opinion, I think it's the most attractive regional accent in England (but then my parents were from that area)! That comment may start the thread off track, though, so apologies ...
