Not surprising, having visited some years the south around Noumea was very much 1950s France while the north .... wasn't .... a lot more Kanak. To get from one to the other I had to go through Les Grands Tetons, which is always fun

Its a swing towards independence compared with the last vote, though - likely a question of when rather than if.

Hard to see them actually winning the third vote. With the same swing YES would win next time; but last time some Kanaks didn't turn out, so they have probably maxed out their present-day potential. If a - with this trend likely - fourth/fifth/... referendum will be held a lot later, changing demoGraphics (and a good economical situation) might enable independence.

Yes, but unless the third will see a reduced YES-% the nationalists will inevitably push for further ones.

Given the numbers who voted there's clearly a mandate for independence and no doubt there will be petitions for new votes, annoying court cases, endless whining, marches and pointless videos by Femi.

The independance leaders, knowing they would once again lose, have boycotted.
Given that everyone knew the no would win, 40% participation is quite high.
