I thought the Tories wld do better Labour can be happy with the Harlow results given the stuff that has been going on there. And just to confirm - the winner in Bush Fair *is* male, right? Quite a few sources on social media (and our own Andrew T) were assuming "Jodi" was a woman. There was a similar tale in the mayoral election in Stratford, PEI, Canada earlier this week where the runners-up were a man called Jody and a woman named Sandy. Local media were not confused, but some outlets might have been.

Democracy Club’s page for the election has an avatar by his name which, presuming it’s him, is almost certainly male.

I kept getting a mental picture of the Lib Dem candidate from the Hartlepool byelection.

I kept getting a mental picture of the Lib Dem candidate from the Hartlepool byelection. Strangely enough, another former LibDem parliamentary byelection candidate featured in this week's contests. Jody Dunn (slightly different spelling, note) is genuinely one for the "famous for 15 minutes, where are they now?" category however.

As for a few Lib Dem by-election candidates of that era who were very visible and then vanished. Nicola Davies in Hodge Hill and Ben Abbotts at Bromley and Chislehurst spring to mind.

Also runner-up in the 2007 Southall byelection of course. Can't believe that was 11 years ago! Nether can I! I spent the weekend before that election helping Nigel - glad he's still flying the flag. Very different political world, it being just a few months before the start of the Crash - in some ways it was the last major election in the UK before "everything changed". My main memory was of ripping fly-posted Labour banners from illegal sites. One of the things about elections in Asian areas is that people treat such laws "flexibly" lol.

Had the inspired Labour nickname of "Nokia Davies" not taken off during the campaign, she would very likely have become an MP.

Three of my Labourite friends travelled up for that and were involved in a stunt where they jumped out in front of her with a giant Dom Joly-style mobile.

That is a bit unfair. What do you expect of them?? Of course if they were Lab or Con narrow losers on a by-election they would be found a safe seat and spend a happy career as lobby fodder. Nicola Davies has "vanished" by becoming a Warwickshire county councillor. Probably more useful...

I'm not sure commenting on an unfair if lighthearted generalisation with another one gets us very far.
