Just the two this week and, unusually, both have the Greens starting in second place to Labour, albeit one considerably closer than the other:
HACKNEY LBC; Victoria (Lab resigned) Candidates: IYENGAR, Harini (Women’s Equality) MORGAN, Philippa Ruth (Liberal Democrats) ROBINSON, Wendy Louise (Green) SILLS, Christopher Darlington (Conservative) WROUT, Penelope Jane (Labour)
2018: Lab 2271, 1880, 1709; Grn 575, 385, 302; LD 299, 270, 160; Con 229, 212, 210 2014: Lab 2096, 2059, 1921; Grn 640, 586, 572; Con 278, 269, 151; UKIP 256; LD 186, 165, 114
The Green candidate was the second placed Green earlier this year and the third one in 2014.
OXFORDSHIRE CC; Iffley Fields & St Marys (Lab resigned) Candidates: HAYWOOD, Damian Joel (Labour) PROCTER, Josie (Liberal Democrats) SIMS, Paul John (Conservative) WILLIAMS, Arthur David (Green)
2017: Lab 1525; Grn 1326; LD 222; Con 181 2013: Grn 1111; Lab 1034; Con 134; LD 90; Ind 49
The Green was Councillor here from 2013 until 2017 and the unsuccessful candidate in that election. He was also councillor for Iffley Fields on Oxford Council from 2006 until 2014, when he did not defend the seat.
MID AND EAST ANTRIM BC; Carrick Castle (Ind died) Candidates: GRAY, Lauren (Alliance Party) HARVEY, Si (Democrats and Veterans Party) JOHNSTON, Peter Keith (Democratic Unionist Party - D.U.P.) MCDERMOTT, John (Ulster Unionist Party) SIBLEY, Will (Independent)
2014: UUP 939; Ind 882, 131, 105; UKIP 749; DUP 749, 439, 398; All 504, 342; TUV 338; PUP 248
In the end the second DUP candidate was elected just 8 votes ahead of the top Alliance candidate.

There was, and it is.
Note Chris Sills out for another try as a Conservative - he was part of the 1968 Conservative wave when he won in Leabridge, and also a councillor in 1982-86 and 1994-2006. Must be one of the few 1964 candidates still active.

Interesting! I was going to ask whether we cover NI local by-elections, but looking back I think the answer is that it has never arisen. AFAIK there have never been such a by-election, other than one May one, in the time this Forum has been running, so what do we do?

Unless I'm particularly thick I can't seem to find who is actually standing.

Unless I'm particularly thick I can't seem to find who is actually standing. SOPN/NOP gives five candidates: GRAY, Lauren (Alliance Party) HARVEY, Si (Democrats and Veterans Party) JOHNSTON, Peter Keith (Democratic Unionist Party - D.U.P.) MCDERMOTT, John (Ulster Unionist Party) SIBLEY, Will (Independent)

Unless one of the Independents was a nationalist, there were no nationalist candidates in 2014 either. It's an urban area in Carrickfergus which is very strongly Unionist.

What's the cause of this? Death or resignation, and of whom?

What's the cause of this? Death or resignation, and of whom? The death of Jim Brown, the independent councillor.

Fun fact: The late Yorkshire cricketer, left-arm spinner Phil Carrick was given the nickname "Fergie" after someone made the connection between his surname and Carrickfergus.

Well, the entire political class in NI are in a permanent trance. Apart from the Alliance and the occasional Green.
