We've had 12 by-elections so far this Parliament (that's as many as we had in the last Parliament) and of those they break down as follows:

Deaths: 4
Resignations (Expenses): 2
Resignations (Elections): 3
Resignations (Others): 3

The other resignations were: Phil Woolas (Oldham East), Marsha Singh (Bradford West) and Louise Mensch nee Bagshaw (Corby)

Which is why I listed him as "Others" as he had to resign by taking an "office of profit"

It was a byelection just the same as any other; it was caused by the result at the general election being declared void. There are people who seem to think there is a concept known as a "re-run election"; there isn't. If a member of Parliament is elected outside a general election, it is in a byelection.

(On the other hand, if the election in one constituency is postponed through the death of a candidate and takes place on a different date, this is still part of the general election)

You find quite a few sources referring to the 2005 Staffs S poll as a "by-election". Of course, it was nothing of the sort
