Where did that name come from? Part of the habit of upper-class families where people have family names that are unrelated to their legal one. Hence Tony Benn = Jimmy within the family.
Posh people are weird.

Manny Shinwell, like the majority of the Independent Labour Party and Trade Unionists was a supporter of Mosley, and he has indicated that Mosley would have had a good chance of leading the party into the 1945 Election had he not resigned from the NEC and Labour. Wonder how things would have went if Mosely had been Elected as a radical left wing leader of the UK. The version of events usually regarded as the truth is somewhat different to this: 1936 Perth: Confrontation between members of the British Union of Fascists (BUF – Oswald Mosley’s Black-shirts) and thousands of people opposed to them The anti-fascist groups comprised members of the Labour Party, Independent Labour Party, Liberal Party, Trade Unions and other individuals. Amongst the speakers at this gathering called by the Perth Trades and Industrial Council was a young Manny Shinwell, then a councillor in Hamilton.

Manny Shinwell was a Labour MP from 1922, and in 1936 he was in his early 50s.

Remember at the time Shinwell supported Mosley Mosely was the Left's dream boy, like Benn and Corbyn, During this period and until her death Mosely's wife was in communication with the likes of Trotsky

Such a government would presumably have been the polar opposite of the actual Attlee government, in the sense that it would have had a dominating leader surrounded by uncolourful senior cabinet ministers.

He began political life as a Tory, spent some time as an independent who was mostly aligned with the Asquithian Liberals, before joining Labour, becoming a junior minister, and then leaving to form his own party, In his early political life he went through a variety of different political viewpoints.
