The Labour candidate gives an address in Falmouth. In Cornish terms, this is almost the other side of the planet!

Labour's candidate is the widower of Candy Atherton, I believe.

Lib Dem candidate Steve Daniell was a longstanding member and paper candidate in LB Bromley before he headed to Cornwall. Hope he gets on a bit better tomorrow than he did in Hayes & Coney Hall in 2010!

Yes I think you are right.
The Conservative candidate is a former parliamentary candidate for both North Cornwall and Taunton Deane.

Yes, I was surprised when Brod Ross was selected as candidate, as Jude Allen only just failed to be elected at a Newquay Town Council byelection for the Treviglas ward (same boundaries) om 15th February; she was beaten by 28 votes in a straight fight against the Liberal Democrat candidate. There is considerable potential for Labour here and Jude is well known as a town council candidate in Newquay; I assume she decided that she didn't fancy a run for the Unitary Council. Of course, this is the third byelection in this ward this year, with the April 15th election being uncontested and Claire Carter becoming the councillor.

It's a big commitment timewise etc becoming a councillor on a county-wide unitary, especially if you don't live where the council is based so I think you're right why your candidate from early in the year isn't running.

When the UA was originally proposed in Cornwall, one of the prominent objections was the sheer time it takes to get around the county. If you're due at a meeting in Saltash, and later one in Truro, you might as well write the day off.

Video conferencing is a boon.

I don't see an andrewteale preview on Britain Elects so far this week. I know there's only one, but surely it must be worth a word or two?

In the last Newquay Treviglas byelection in July, the result was declared about 11:30 PM, so I expect it will be counted tonight.

Newquay is currently hosting the Boardmasters Festival, which attracts huge crowds (at least 50,000 last year). The venue is very close to this ward, so it will be busy there today.
