Great result as Labour have under-performed here for years. Good result in the other by election but both low turnouts

Good result in the other by election but both low turnouts Anyone know why the turnouts were so low in Basildon? Deferred elections rarely have good turnouts even by local government standards-and local government electoral turnout in England usually ranges from 25-40%.

They weren't deferred, but they were taking place only seven weeks after those seats previously voted.

I have a feeling the two South Northamptonshire wards, from which we have heard nothing and are both very rural, may be counting tomorrow along with Basingstoke and Deane.
Brent and Cherwell are definitely counting tonight.

The total number of valid ballot papers was barely half (51.2%) of the May total in Lee Chapel North but a little over 60% (61.3%) in Pitsea South East. Lee Chapel North saw a Conservative to Labour swing of around 1½% since May and some 2¼% in Pitsea South East.

That's a remarkably static Conservative vote share in a ward where UKIP were the incumbents and are now out of the game.

Gratifying for us but along with the West Somerset result it shows how badly we sank after 2010 - not even standing in wards which are now winnable.

I knew they were working it hard, and it's an area that's felt politically abandoned (uncontested elections, Cllr disqualified for dong nothing) and part of the fallout from Northamptonshire Council's problems. But that's still a brilliant result by a skeleton team.
