Mexico is electing a new president, Senate and Chamber of Deputies on the 1st of July. We do not seem to have a thread for this. Controversial 64-year old veteran left nationalist maverick Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) from his own personlist party the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) has been leading since the start of the campaign with 38-year old lawyer Ricardo Anaya Cortés from the Conservative PAN as his only serious rival. They are both in alliance with other parties and "shell parties", most notably the PAN are allied with the broad tent centre-left/left nationalist Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), the party AMLO represented in both his previous presidential campaigns, but left in 2012 to found MORENA two years later. The traditional "party of power" PRI are represented by a bland technocrat nobody likes and the "cowboy governor" of Nuevo León, known as El Bronco, is running to boost his already seriously inflated ego. There is no run-off, which benefits AMLO.

It would have to be PAN for me. MORENA is too far left and the PRI is a typically corrupt, authoritarian party of power.

Unless the polls are completely wrong AMLO will comfortably win. Neither of the other two main candidates have established themselves as the challenger.

For 30 years Mexico has been Ireland: The "natural" party of governing (FF, PRI) now and again interrupted by short-living RightLeft-coalitions (FG&LAB, PAN&PRD).
Ironically AMLO (the exDirector of PRI's centre for indigenous affairs) will - by destroying PRI - restore old PRI-Mexico: A nationalistic&socialistic RulingParty challenged (without much success) by a rightliberal BusinessParty (either PAN or PRI, probably PAN).

0.5% counted:
47% AMLO 27% Anaya 17% Meade
Anaya stronger than polled, Meade weaker. If this continues in this way, PRI will be in a very difficult situation.
Most governorships will be swept by MORENA, of course; PAN has low chances in Puebla and Veracruz (against MORENA), better ones in Yucatan (against PRI).

Seems he's a friend of Corbyn. Is he another Chavez then?
His policy of winding down the disastrous War on Drugs would help, at least.

Whatever he is, he is exactly what the Mexican political and business elite deserve.

Is he a bit of a Chevenement type, I wonder? Chevenement came to my mind, too. A recycled PRI-caudillo, combining nationalism/law&order with socialism. His strongest support can be found among students though.

During my first year of uni a couple of my neighbours in the halls were vocal Conservative supporters, which of course led to quite a bit of mutual (but friendly) ribbing during the 2010 general election period.

We will watch with interest whether AMLO is all mouth, like most political leaders, or whether he actually lives up to his speeches, and does something useful, like Lula.

Surely shome mishtake? Striking is, that those students support someone, who is sometimes called "Mexico's Trump" (a NickName, which is certainly not very fitting).
