I recently have been toying with the idea of seeing what it would look like if membership in the House of Commons was cut to 435, the number of members in the US House of Representatives. +/- 10% deviation. Orkney and Shetland, Na h-Eileanan an Iar, and the Isle of Wight are still protected. Local authorities kept together when possible. This is what Northern Ireland would look:

I made 6 of Norn Iron's local authorities constituencies all to themselves.

This scenario would be more plausible if it was also combined with 215 PR seats elected by list-PR.

This scenario would be more plausible if it was also combined with 215 PR seats elected by list-PR. That's not inherently contradictory with this scenario. This only assumes there are 435 Westminster constituencies. That's unchangeable. Pretty much everything else is not.

Some Wales local authorities that can become a constituency by themselves: Flintshire (112,938) Wrexham (95,880) Powys (99,262) Newport (100,931) Bridgend (101,684) Neath Port Talbot (103,037) could be one to itself, but the numbers for neighboring authorities might make it unworkable.

Wales: I made sure to maintain road contiguity. The Welsh Valleys were tricky and Monmouth had to split in half.

The valleys tend to run north to south..

The valleys tend to run north to south.. Indeed. This dictated the design of the Welsh Valley seats. Brigend and Newport were off-limits, and both Torfean and Monmouth were around 65-70k in electorate. And since Torfean lacked anything on the level of a road connection to Caerphilly, and had much better connections to Southern Monmouth, I decided to split Monmouth.

I was thinking more of your Merthyr/Aberdare/Northern Rhondda seat

So the two seats should be redone, with Pontypridd being placed with Merthyr Tydfil?

Chislehurst & Sidcup is essentially an expanded version of the pre-1974 Chislehurst seat, since both Chislehurst and Sidcup were in the Chislehurst constituency from 1945 to 1974.

Yes of course the constituency had identical boundaries (from 1951) to the then Chislehurst & Sidcup urban district. This seat includes quite a large chunk of Bexley, a small part of Orpington (St Mary Cray) and excludes Mottingham and part of Sidcup (Blackfen & Lamorbey)

These are my basic calculations: electorate in a given region; region name; seat allotment 1874396 NE (18) 5074302 NW (49) 3722035 Yorkshire (36) 3842736 Scotland (37 - taking into account the two protected seats puts one at 39) 1243369 NI (12) 2181841 Wales (21) 3989320 W Midlands (38) 3275046 E Midlands (32) 4242266 E of England (42) 5118884 London (50) 3930770 SW (38) 6067475 SE (59) Protected seats: Isle of Wight, Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland 44562440 in total 44562440/432=103154 92839 minimum; 113469 maximum

Something interesting about this quota is that Devonwall is not even on the table. Cornwall is 392,223; this makes it a slam dunk for 4 wholely contained constituencies.

I screwed up the maths and ended up with a mid point of about 93. Oh well - can't arsed to redo it. Having 480 seats or whatever makes no more or less sense

Blame me.

These are my basic calculations: electorate in a given region; region name; seat allotment 1874396 NE (19) 5074302 NW (48)3722035 Yorkshire (36) 3842736 Scotland (37 - taking into account the two protected seats puts one at 39) 1243369 NI (12) 2181841 Wales (21) 3989320 W Midlands (38) 3275046 E Midlands (32) 4242266 E of England (42) 5118884 London (50) 3930770 SW (38) 6067475 SE (59) Protected seats: Isle of Wight, Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland 44562440 in total 44562440/432=103154 92839 minimum; 113469 maximum Dammit, I've just finished a North West proposal based on 49 seats. EDIT: On that quota the allocation should be 18 for the North East and 49 for the North West.

However, it's not really all that good probably, esp. since my Northumberland seat is awkwardly shaped...
