Steed was the man who calculated the notional 1970 general election results which were used by the BBC. He will have been in his early thirties at this time (he's 78 this year). Wonderful stuff, as always, hullenedge.

Michael and I shared the Lib Dem case at a Boundary Commission of Inquiry in East Kent some years ago, not very successfully I seem to remember as it was a close call which of us did most to get up the nose of a really obnoxious commissioner.I know I got into trouble for being rather rude to assorted Tory MPs, notably Damian Green, Anne Widdecombe and Michael Howard, for not knowing their stuff, and the commissioner was wonderfully protective of the poor little dears, while Michael was busy changing our support for one scheme to something which superficially looked exactly the opposite, in order to protect our principal concern. Michael then as always was wonderfully quick on his feet, but left the much less fleet-footed commissioner rather confused which in the end did not help our case. edit. If Michael is only 78, he's younger than me . I would have guessed he was older!

We were very lucky to have Michael Steed's contributions to our local press. Slightly off topic...Michael Steed's result, Todmorden MB 1971:- He did lose to a maestro and magician, who lost (against trend) to a Liberal in 1976.
