Suppose Major quits as party leader and PM in 1995 after being challenged by Redwood.
Who would’ve won the subsequent leadership election?

Interesting question, especially with 20+ years of history in between. It wouldn’t have been Redwood that’s for sure.
Heseltine and Clarke would both of been fine PMs (IMHO) but both would probably be portrayed as too pro EU.
A young Portillo? Lamont from the back benches? A safe man like Rifkind?

Thatcher comes back. Rescues the party. Smashes blair to pieces. Her revolution is seen though to completion.

Probably someone from the Centre Right of the Party who was in that Cabinet like Michael Howard or Peter Lilley. Clarke and Heseltine would be too pro-European, Redwood not popular enough and Portillo would have decided to wait seeing the position at that time as a hospital pass.
