Republicans won the mayoral election in Fort Worth in Texas last week by 53%-46%. Tarrant County where Fort Worth is located went for Biden in November - the first time it voted Democrat since 1964. The Mayoral election seems to have been influenced largely by the Republican being Chief of Staff to the termed out incumbent who’s going out with high approval numbers, and the Democrat being a godawful fundraiser and had to be bailed out late by EMILY’s List and a couple of other outside groups. A phenomenonal turnout compared to theast few elections - over 88,000, up by nearly 50,000 votes on 2 years ago, which was up on the time before.

This is a long way off, but still interesting given Alaska's new voting system. Murkowski was always going to face an incredibly tough battle to retain her seat and the new system makes the chance of her holding it higher.

Virginia gubernatorial primary on Tuesday - former Governor Terry McAuliffe is almost certain to win based on polls. Update: Dave Wasserman called it for McAuliffe just 16 minutes after the polls closed. Decision Desk called it ten minutes later. McAuliffe's currently well north of 60%, and with a lead of nearly 50% over the nearest challenger.

To be fair, she’s not even confirmed she’s running yet, so will have done little, if anything, in the way of advertising etc.

Didn't she really push for the new voting system?
It would seem odd for her to do that if she wasn't going to run. The old system, of course, would have seen her lose the GOP primary badly to the Trump candidate and her satisfaction numbers are worse today than when she won with her write-in campaign in 2010.

Once the campaign gets going Murkowski, if she runs, is going to be able to point out that if the final two are Gross and Tshibaka the latter will easily win whereas if it is Murkowski and Tshibaka the former will win.

If Murkowski couldn't lose under the old system, in the Tea Party wave election of 2010, what makes people think she'll lose this time?

If Murkowski couldn't lose under the old system, in the Tea Party wave election of 2010, what makes people think she'll lose this time? Greater polarisation and worse approval ratings

Most importantly, does she say Mur-koff-ski or Mur-cow-ski?

Most importantly, does she say Mur-koff-ski or Mur-cow-ski? For how she/ American English pronounces it, it's the latter.
In Polish, it's the former, but the 'ff' is more of a 'v' sound. Of course if she were an actual Pole, it would be Murkowska.

You’ve probably got to go back to the 19th century to find the last member of the family born in Poland, her paternal grandfather (also Frank like her father who as Governor of Alaska appointed her to fill his own Senate seat) who appears on the 1920 Census in Wisconsin, aged 47, and married to a Helen Hunt.

It's been rumoured for some time now, but today, Representative Val Demings (D) of Florida's 10th Congressional District formally launched her campaign for Senate. Given that Stephanie Murphy has ruled herself out, and the only other major candidate in the Dem primary is the awful former representative Alan Grayson, Demings should have the D nomination all sewn up. She's probably the strongest recruit they could have hoped for, but it's still very hard to see her beating Marco Rubio in a red-trending state during a Biden midterm.

The only elected Democrat statewide since Bill Nelson lost in 2018.

It would seem odd for her to do that if she wasn't going to run. The old system, of course, would have seen her lose the GOP primary badly to the Trump candidate and her satisfaction numbers are worse today than when she won with her write-in campaign in 2010.
Retirement however tempting would surely seem too much like giving into Trump and his takeover of the GOP.

Probably so, and it may not be entirely coincidental that Schumer, valuing her willingness to defy her party in the Senate, has been pushing through some reasonably small scale Alaska specific Bills, possibly to give her some ammunition of the “I get things done” variety to use in her re-election.
